Stats on aggressiveness over the board

Post by Rob Thompson » Mon Aug 23, 2010 7:09 pm

I just found (well, Dr Evan Harris posted a link to it on twitter ) this chessbase article regarding how aggressive male + female players are in the opening. More interesting is what was found when men play women, and there is some speculation that this may be a contributory reason as to why not as many women play. How true this is I don't know, but it looked an intersting topic for discussion.

This may want to be in the "Women's Chess" forum, i am not sure
True glory lies in doing what deserves to be written; in writing what deserves to be read.

According to the study, "the most striking result is that male players, when playing against female opponents, choose about 1 percentage point more aggressive openings compared to when playing against male opponents even when the playing strength and degree of aggressiveness are the same for the male and female opponents." This doesn't strike me as a very exciting finding. Most men probably play the same line against either a male or female of X rating, while a much smaller number of men go all caveman against female players.
