Was told of this years ago but have forgotten.
What do the letters mean? You use this every move, C means check check it could be mate.
Need H E C and K
Hope I have made sense?

I teach my pupils to use a CCTV to look at the chessboard:

Look for Checks, Captures, Threats and Violence (or ...will lead to Victory, for those who don't like violence).

C - Check cheque. Usually the tournament organiser will try to pay your appearance fee with a dud one. Make sure it's gone through before you start your first game.

H - Horse. The trickiest of pieces. Bone up on how it moves before the games (hint - it can go backwards as well as forwards).

E - En passant. If you can't play PxP the normal way, simply remove one of your opponent's pawns, place yours somewhere close to the square where it used to be and say "en passant".

C - Caissa. If you're losing badly, a quick prayer to Caissa might do the trick.

K - Kick. The vast majority of players graded above 150 wear hobnail boots. If you insist on the using the marks and spencer's slippers your mum bought you for Christmas, you'll never progress beyond 100.

He'll need a copy of Chess for Kids, published by Right Way Books on 28 October. He should also visit www.chesskids.com.

I'll definitely be getting that one. I've found the chess kids site invaluable over the last few years.

Many thanks. I'm currently working on a website to publicize the book. It should be uploaded at some point over the weekend.

Thanks John, invaluable.

Get the impression this site is for Grandmasters and people that think they are Grandmasters, not little people.

Sorry Warren, just having a bit of fun. This site isn't only for strong players, anyone graded over 120 is welcome here. Have you checked out the Chess Kids site that Richard mentioned? There are loads of resources there for beginners (not just children!).

I understand Jon, but I would like to know the answer. Maybe I was having a bad day at the office

Hopefully Carlsen can still recover to stay number one in the official listings. Is this the last event they will play in that will count for the November rating list?
