Hello,
the contract for our club's website hosting has expired and the current provider has increased the costs by over 50%: as this comes form my own, limited, pocket I am looking for a reliable and economical Host.
Any suggestions will be most welcome, it will be a very simple website/blog and I assume that I still own the domain name * sittingbournechess.co.uk* however my (ex) provider are being so difficult this may no longer be the case
Many thanks
Trefor

Get your club to pay for the hosting, perhaps? If it's of perceived value to the club, would your club's committee object to contributing even a share of it?

Trefor,
I would suggest the most excellent Zen Internet for your needs :
http://www.zen.co.uk/ but there are many bargain basement hosters that might beat them on price.
If price is the main criteria then I do not have good suggestions.
Perhaps other members of this forum have more experience in this area?

Thanks Alex
That makes sense of course, the website did attract at least 2 regular members last season, who are now fully paid up at the club - I would still like the best deal though
John
I will look at Zen when i get home - writing this during a quiet time at work - see you at the next 4NCL

There are plenty of free hosts around. The typical drawback is they're not very fast. I find the technical support at eg
http://x10hosting.com/, which I'd recommend, rather better than some paid for hosts.....

I can assist of course if anyone needs it, although I no longer really advertise the number of sites I run or hosting I provide since free time is rather short...

If you are going to go for another domain name, go with a provider that gives you free web forwarding, then you're free to get any free web site.
If you're not looking to update the website frequently, I might be able to loan you some space off my account with justhosts.

Many thanks one and all
I took John's advice and signed up with Zen - transferring my domain was painless now all I need to work out is exactly what they mean by
" you need to reply to this email with the DNS preferences for your domain name sittingbournechess.co.uk:
A Record (for website traffic)
MX Record (or the email address that you would like your email to be forwarded to) "
and I will be well away - hopefully a quick phone call and our website may be online by tomorrow

Trefor,
The A record (for a domain under the DNS system) determines the mapping domain -> IP address
The MX (mail eXchanger) record determines how email for the domain is routed.
You may well only want to use the domain to route http type traffic and not bother with email traffic.
