BDCA vs MCF Match - 17th October 2010

On Sunday 17th October 2010 the Bradford and District Chess Association (BDCA) played a 20 board friendly match against the Manchester Chess Federation (MCF). Appropriate grading bands were agreed to ensure a close contest and the match was hosted by Idle Chess Club (Bradford), at the famous “Idle Working Mens Club”.

A free lunch was provided for all before the match commenced at 12:00 which allowed both teams the opportunity to have a chat and get to know one another in the spirit of this friendly match. The match had been originally organised as an opportunity to strengthen relations between these two great northern chess cities with the hope that more can be done in the near future to integrate the MCF into the northern chess circuit.

Following lunch play commenced on all boards with Bradford winning the toss and claiming the white bits on their odd boards. The match was played with friendly competitive enthusiasm by both teams which resulted in a hard fought match. After three and half hours play the score stood at 9-9 with two boards still playing. Bradford’s Gary Corcoran converted a Queen vs Rook and Bishop ending (with several pawns a piece) into a win and thus put Bradford in the lead at 10-9. The final match went down to the last few seconds with Bradford’s Phil Watson managing to capitalise on his space advantage in a 2 Bishop and Rook vs 2 Rooks ending (again with several paws each) and secured a win for Bradford to end the match BDCA 11 – 9 MCF.

The BDCA would like to thank the MCF for travelling to Bradford for this match, and look forward to the return fixture next year some time.

If any other leagues or city would like to accept an open challenge from Bradford to play a similar graded friendly match then we are willing to take on all challengers and will be happy to provide facilities and food for any team willing to travel to Bradford to play us.

Best Regards
