I plead guilty to the charge of being a subscriber to a right wing newspaper. Even more ominously, I should be in the dock for voting for Boris Johnson.
I have been called many things: duffer, pedant, idiot and so on ad infinitum. However, for chess players to be called, as a class, strategic thinkers, sober and, dare one say it, serious beyond words is a blow so hurtful that I must respond. How can such a thing be said? Has the writer been to a chess organisation's AGM? I fear he has. I, on the other hand, now try to avoid them.
Some reckon bridge buffs for their tans and beers,
I rather think chess should excite more cheers.
(With apologies to a Greek national hero.)
Evidently not a chess player.

He doesnt really talk enough about chess in that article for my liking. I stopped reading it about half way though.

Re: Evidently not a chess player.
I was hoping for a little more chess to be included though. These bridge players - they are always trying to muscle in on the chess scene. I think we should take more of a stand to destroying them and their blasphemous game that threatens the purity of the chess world - not try and pair up like they are our buddies!
