Chess books in London.

Post by Michael Mc Mahon » Sat Apr 02, 2011 12:07 am

I'll be visiting london next week and want to use the time to pick up some books if I get the time. Can anyone recommend the best place to find books in London. If there is anyplace to get some secondhand that would also be great.

Mick.

The shop on 44 Baker Street is probably your best bet for new chess books. They also have some used books. For used chess books, there used to be Barrie Ellen in Southend (Essex) but I understand he's no more with us. I don't know if there are any specialist used book dealers in the greater London area.

Can't make out all the titles but "Chess Combination as a Fine Art" by Keres and Golz is worth snapping up. Pachman's "Attack and Defence in Modern Chess Tactics" retains some interest. Reti's "Masters of the Chessboard" is out of print (as far as I know).

Hi Arshad
Thanks for your reply. I'd heard of the london chess centre but had forgotten it. I'll pay a visit for sure.

Hi

It's not the best picture I have ever taken. (I could not wait to dive in).

Loads of classics in that box and it is now near empty.

The box, the corner of which you can just see if full of Opening Books.
(now you are dribbling all your keyboard).

Glad to say it is still ½ full, though I picked up a handful
from the Everyman Opening catelgue some spanking new.

(Now you are you are gnawing on your keyboard.)

Ensured that 'Chess Combination as a Fine Art' went to a promising Scottish junior.

It is the work of Kurt Richter. Keres and Golz are on the cover
as Editors, inside it's all Richter's material.

"The best chess book ever written. " Andy Burnett.
(I'd certainly put it in the top five.)

Hi Michael,
CCF Mindgames are in Coulsdon about 15 miles south of the centre of London, approx 5 minutes from Smitham and Coulsdon South railway stations. We have approximately 3000 used chess books in stock. You will be very welcome to come and browse over a cup of tea/coffee.

Hi John.

Post a link to your shop site.

Took a better picture of the £1.00 box.

The opening books and the remaining 'good books' were placed
in the same box late in the afternoon.

Most had gone by the time the bookstall, ran by Chess Supplies Scotland, closed
but there are still a few left.

Ah - "the Chess Scene". Remember getting that from the local library when I was a lad. Excellent read

Something similar updated to our present times would certainly be a runner, methinks.......

Some are outdated opening books that weren't that great even when they came out; others are gems. Gallagher's "Starting Out: The King's Indian," and Tal and Damsky's "The Heavy Pieces in Action" should be snapped up post-haste. I think I see a copy of "Korchnoi's 400 Best Games" there, and that should also be gobbled up with alacrity.

Attacking The King is good, although you may not feel comfortable buying books by the author in question.

Ah yes, Bobby Blunder and Mr Woodpusher - more innocent (in every sense) days :(

I bought the stock from his shop ;-)

I am now selling what remains at the Chess Classic!
