Checkmate Series II
This is shaping up to be a worthy successor to Series I, currently being distributed around Europe: some excellent sponsors and creative players.

Re: Chess on TV
The series has now got a distributor, and they are selling it to European territories - not sure how they are getting on in the UK though!

https://twitter.com/checkmatetvshow tweets every few days saying the exact same thing: "Checkmate TV Show Season I is now in distribution with Optimum Television as soon as we have a date for broadcasting we will let you know" --- they've been tweeting that for a couple of months, I think.

Whether it will take place in November, of course, is another matter

Endeavour returns to ITV for a new series on Sunday at 8 pm; the story features an eminent chess player being drowned before a man v machine match (it is set in 1967)

Re: Chess on TV
I expect they will take some dramatic licence with the strength of chess playing computers in 1967. Their standard of play struggled to score points in Minor tournaments. It wasn't unknown for universities to set their chess programs against one another. That even included US v USSR although I cannot recall the year.Mick Norris wrote: before a man v machine match (it is set in 1967)

Re: Chess on TV
I found this in the 1968 edition of Gerald Abrahams' "The Chess Mind". According to Abrahams it was the 3rd game in a match played in March 1967, of which the first two were drawn, and White's 15th move was "probably the first real sacrifice made by a computer".Roger de Coverly wrote: That even included US v USSR although I cannot recall the year.

I suppose that comment might show even a reasonably strong player not grasping computer play at that time. 4.Ne5 no more or less a sacrifice really.Reg Clucas wrote:According to Abrahams it was the 3rd game in a match played in March 1967, of which the first two were drawn, and White's 15th move was "probably the first real sacrifice made by a computer"

During this weekend i will see if i can find them and convert them so i<
Be careful you don't infringe copyright. But putting Master Game 1980 and 1981 on youtube resulted in the BBC reissuing those programmes. You can buy them.
You can find my list of collected broadcast chess programmes on the ECF website. As far as I know, it is the largest in English in the world. But there are many live broadcasts of games on the internet now.
Terrestrial TV broadcasts of chess would be terrific for chess. Get 1000-5000 people to write in independently request a series and the schedulers might respond. Two series were recorded in 2015 and 2016 for this purpose. But they have yet to appear anywhere in the world.
