I'm starting to believe Hawkins might have to work hard for the draw v Short

with rooks on!

If Jones finds a pretty finish he is a contender for best game prize

Which he did! :D

Nice to be in a tournament with GMs, less nice when they prepare something specifically for you and attack like that!

There's a weird thing going on with the live games. I had it on Short - Hawkins and every so often it changes to Adams - Howell :/.

Rybka giving Hawkins v Short =+. I'm not convinced it really understands the position, since it is willing to swap rooks. But Short must have reasonable winning chances, with e3 weak and a chance to create a q-side passed pawn

It looks like Howell has blundered if I'm not mistaken

hmm, seems so. ng5 allows f5 ef6 ng5 with the skewer on the rook. only works after ng5 allowing black to clear the efile

Adams found f5 of course. Howell didn't give away the whole rook, but clearly losing now

Yes, I also think it was just a blunder.

At first I wasn't sure if it was just a blunder or if Howell had just ran out of options and his position just buckled.

Now it seems he is just an exchange down, and his position is still dire.

I guess is an example of overreaching. Pawn up and trying to press, easy to try for more than the position allows.

Where's Karsten Mueller when you need him?!

It does look close to winning for her, Stephen's a-pawn isn't going anywhere fast.

I was not following closely, but I was surprised she allowed the exchange of queens. If pushed, I would say Black can hold that rook ending, but someone better than I am can give a more authoritative judgement.
