and if Black plays his king to a5, then White plays Kc4-d5, you get the queen endgame, which is rather pointless for Black, as he certainly cannot win it.

How about ... h5 now trying for white to respond with h2-h4 then push e-pawn to force

Kd3 Kxc5/Kxe3 then forcing the king back via opposition, running the king out of moves and making White have to play g3-g4 losing a pawn?

Don't know if Black actually *can* do this, but it seems a bit risky for Mickey if he can.

[after posting I see that Black's gone ... e3 straight away so perhaps this idea is cobblers (unless BLack's trying for it via a different move order)]

[and while I was typing the above they've agreed a draw so I guess it was cobblers after all]

Not sure what your exact variation is, but White sets up a roadblock on the e-file with his king, the Black king shall not pass.

Well done Jon - you are totally right about the ending. It is White who has to be careful. Now we will have to wait for Karsten Muller to analyse it for ChessBase

Well it's a bit pointless now, but if in the final position the pawns were on h4 and h5 then I was imagining something like

... e3/Kd3 Kxc5/Kxe3 and I was type this out I realise my error. I was imagining that Black had ... Kc3 next move (rather than ... Kc4 which is a tad more legal) taking the opposition.

I asked the question a while back - but why only 4 live games today.

Dunno, but one of them is a rook ending. Yum.

So what about Short-Howell. It soon reminds me of the point that knights defending each other aren't great. Mind you Nosher is a pawn up if you are not that worried about Black's d pawn

Might just be my imagination, but it looks as though Howell's bishops are in control of the position. I suppose that's why Short is forcing one of them to move...

Jonathan Hawkins and Richard Bates have joined Mickey & Gawain on 4/5 with Nigel or possibly David to be leading on 4.5/5 and the other on 4.
