It seems that Short is making progress against Hawkins. I still can't see him winning it though.

I like the idea of mating with rb7-b5-c5 ..kb1 ka3 bb2 rc1#, but probably not best play.

However definitely tough to defend passively against a player like Short, he is finding ideas.

er, my plan was to play g5 allowing a different stalemate  . I've been trying to make rf7 work in some other position to save face, but unsuccessfully

Isn't Rf7 Rxh5 Kg3 pretty easy?

I vaguely recollect a similar R+3 v R+1 ending (Medina - Speelman?) which Jon Speelman analysed exhaustively in "Analysing the Endgame" and proved after several pages to be a draw, contrary to one's instinctive assessment. I can't lay my hands on my copy, but it might be a pointer to correct play in this position.

Is Adams winning now? Looks like it will be diffcult for white to stop the queenside pawns.

For a minute there I thought Adams and Howell were trying to draw which seemed weird considering.

OK Kf4 in Houska game the check can be countered as opposed to repeating the previous position with the fruity RxH for Gordon. She should win this as long as she doesn't make a pigs ear of the ending. As stated before - tough ending but win for Houska.
