I know have the games, I think (though I won't really know until it's updated). I always seem to have trouble with live chess. I dunno if it comes of living in a rural area with pretty slow broadband.

You know one thing that always baffles me about these big tournaments are the 'press conferences' that you often see photographed. Who are these mysterious people that are interviewing the top players? I have even searched around for them and never have I seen a youtube video of a chess press conference - is it some sort of a european thing that the news people take their reports back home and they are never seen or heard of again, while our own press turn a blind eye?

Yay, I got my first win in slow chess in my last game of the U120 today . My opponent hadn't played competitively before and lost a piece to a fork. Mating was hard, but I did it eventually. Yay! My game finished early, so I could have gone to the commentary room for the main event, but I was rather drained by then. I'm sure I spotted several forumites there both yesterday and today.

Well done Nicky, it is always nice to get over the first hurdle of winning a long chess game, and it tends to feel quite good as people are tough to beat when they have alot of thinking time.

Time Control in the Open

40 moves in 90 minutes then an extra half hour with 30 second increment per move throughout.

Why not just say 120 minutes plus 30 second increment throughout? Aside from anything else it would save the confusion in the first round when some of the clocks weren't set properly (including mine) and you'd always know how much time you have left.

Adding extra time after 40 moves seems to be adding an unnecessary level of complication to my eyes.

1) not a legal time control for norm purposes
2) time controls without intermediate stages are rubbish. Very easy to say that the two are not different in theory, but they are very different in practice.
