I'll have my hands full on board 78, giving away 350 rating points.
An all-forum clash, no less.

A sobering draw there for forumites Jon Bryant & Roger de Coverly.

Reminds me of the time in 2008 when, having made the welcoming speech at the big European International in Liverpool & seen off the Lord Mayor and dignitaries, I took my seat at the board fifteen minutes late in front of Stephen Gordon. There was only ever going to be one result there of course. But it was hastened by my head going walk-about :?

I've drawn with Nick P twice. Ok one of them was when he/they were 11. I'd expected Simon W or Mark H possibly from the provisional list. Again I've drawn with Simon W. but it was a rapid-play when he was 13 or 14.

If anything it's harder work against an IM because they are looking for points and rating points in pursuit of the GM title or norm.

My club colleague Andy Smith welcomes the participation of Swedish player Axel Smith , since it introduces even more confusion into the minds of potential opponents who mistake him for Alan Smith. There's nothing better than confusing potential opponents as to your likely opening choices and style of play. Even Nigel Short got half confused, not that it mattered, and that was with only two A Smiths to choose from.

I'm playing in the U120 section this weekend. I think it's too strong a section for me, but unfortunately there's no U100 section :(.

There's no room for one! We need a bigger venue! ;-)

Seriously, if you haven't already entered and you want to play next weekend, email me all the usual details that you would find on an entry form, and keep your fingers crossed. We can take about 460 people at one go, and this Sunday I think that will easily be reached.

Pay on arrival and fill in a form. You won't avoid the late fee.

Who do you think the pairings have been kind/ unkind to in the Classic?

My predictions are: Kramnik, Aronian, and Carlsen to win, Adams- Anand to end drawn today, and Carlsen to win the tournament outright.

I am going to take the controversial step of agreeing with all Ben's predictions today :D

As for the winner, who knows, but to be different I'll plump for Kramnik. (I also think Kramnik has a reasonably good draw).

Nakamura seems to have a testing first half to the tournament!

I think the Tal Memorial results are of much significance and would expect Aronian and Carlsen to be the main players here too. Carlsen is favourite because he is more likely to be ruthless with the, er, English players, which is particuarly valuable with the 3-1-0 system

Anybody else having trouble loading the live games?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
