Wellington College Training Weekend 3

The third (and probably the most successful) training weekend organised by Nick Pert took place at Wellington College on July 7/8th, 2012.

Thanks John for the lovely photos! Nick's training weekend was superb! I was a bit nervous about "classroom style" coaching from 10-5 as Callaghan is only 6, but it was wonderful! He kept the children engaged the entire time! The children and adults were spaced out in ability appropriate level classrooms with the instructors, making the weekend more beneficial! The venue was excellent for parents waiting, there was a posh room with comfy couches and Internet access and a "buffet style" lunch with excellent food. Well, well worth the money (I actually felt a bit bad paying so low for what we got out of it)! Callaghan's only complaint was that he did not beat Nick in the Simul!! haha!

There will be another Wellington College Training weekend on 6/7 October. Entry forms can be found on the ECF Calendar.
These are getting more popular, and are a massive boost to chess in England. Many people who attended the last training weekend before the British went on to win first prize at various age groups or as most improved players.
GM David Howell and GM Simon Williams and Ken Coates are likely to be in attendence this time for at least 1 day.
The bottom group is for talented young juniors up to 110 grade. The 2nd group ended up being mainly juniors too from 100-150 grade although adults are welcome. The top group (over 150) had several adult and junior players together.
Coaches rotate around the groups to give exposure to different styles on different subjects. There is teaching all day Saturday and Sunday morning. In a change from last time there will also be an hour teaching after lunch on the Saturday. Sunday afternoon is a chance to challenge a GM in a simultaneous game.
The cost is £60 for the weekend or £40 for one day, but juniors get a £10 discount. Lunch is included. The College has fantastic grounds and there is a waiting area with flat screen TVs for parents with a coffee bar.
The feedback so far has been very positive so hopefully it continues!
