Fatigue and/or time pressure seems to have set in. Mike is playing like I do in a quickplay finish after a day's work. One suddenly finds one's position unravelling, seemingly inexorably; and like all bad dreams, it feels like it is being enacted in slow motion, even as panic sets in.

Is Shaw-Palliser not drawn if Shaw's knight gets to g2?

After 75...Kf5, isn't 76 Kxe3 (bishop) just a simple draw or am I missing something for the second time in quick succession this evening?

Pointing out (for anyone who had forgotten) that tomorrow is a rest day in the Championships. Has the draw for Monday's round 7 games been published yet? I've looked on the main website and they don't seem to be there yet.

The usual practice is to wait until Sunday evening. The issue is whether they are going to get any withdrawals, noting that they had to find a substitute for Saturday's game.

In previous years it's been the practice not to publish the Round 7 draw until Sunday evening, in case anyone drops out during the day.

Edit: Roger beat me to it.

Goodness, two replies at once! Thank you both. :D

But does anyone want to predict the draw? It will be Howell versus Jones, but what colours? And isn't Gordon also up there on the same score as Howell? Someone said above that the Howell-Jones game will be decisive, but surely Gordon is still in the mix as well? He lost to Jones, but what is his record like against Howell?

Top 18 (everyone on 4/6 or higher) after 6 rounds are:

1. GM Jones, Gawain C 5.5 ENG 2655
2. GM Howell, David W 5.0 ENG 2620
3. GM Gordon, Stephen 5.0 ENG 2539
4. IM Hawkins, Jonathan 4.5 ENG 2499
5. GM Arkell, Keith C 4.5 ENG 2441
6. GM Turner, Matthew 4.0 SCO 2508
7. GM Gormally, Daniel 4.0 ENG 2505
8. GM Conquest, Stuart 4.0 ENG 2501
9. IM Hanley, Craig A 4.0 ENG 2419
10. IM Houska, Jovanka 4.0 ENG 2406
11. IM Rudd, Jack 4.0 ENG 2295
12. Chapman, Terry P 4.0 ENG 2290
13. FM Walker, David J 4.0 ENG 2276
14. FM Storey, Charles 4.0 ENG 2247
15. Holland, James P 4.0 ENG 2200
16. Harvey, Marcus R 4.0 ENG 2134
17. Jackson, James P 4.0 ENG 2126
18. Waters, Clive L 4.0 ENG 2106

Top three pretty much what you'd expect by rating. Three GMs and three IMs yet to extract themselves from the chasing pack of 13 players on 4/6.

The top three pairings look as if they'll be Howell v Jones, Arkell v Gordon, Chapman v Hawkins.

I assume there's cricket today? Scores may actually exceed the current County Championship game in Durham where 35 wickets have fallen in two days...
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
