obviously in David Howell's case, the clock is right ....
guess who doesn't play with increments ... :?

how many of us would have found 29 Bxa6 to get the pawn back in kanwal's game (board 24 or so)?
Not me. Nice tactic. I wonder how far back she saw that. Quite a long forcing sequence leading up to that.

I'm not sure it's so simple to hold.
I'm sure you are right it is not simple, but I was finding hard to find a plan for white without g4, when the pawn chain starts to look weak.

I suspect Howell is trying to do nothing before the time control, then will have a long think until he is playing on the increment again. :)
I thought h3-g4 was the plan! I have to admit I didn't see the Black king coming to d5, but maybe it can be kicked by Bc2, Kd3, Bd1-f3.

Does it matter? Perhaps 37. Rh4 is enough?

I'm going to stick my neck out here: Arkell to win after Rh4 Nxh4 Nxh4, the queenside pawns are too much.

it is crap and he will have to resign soon.

(Kh2 h4 gxf4 Rg6. So Re6 before Nf4 was very important)

rather a sudden collapse ...

Arkell will now spend hours building a fortress trying to hold the position

Just goes to show. Jones would have been a good scalp for Arkell, only needs one reasonable move to take the heat out of the position, doesn't play it and collapses in a heap. That can happen Keith Arkell, happens to decent club and county players on the verge of a scalp all the time, probably could happen to Gawain Jones if he were on the point of doing Kramnik over.
