More positive stuff from the organisers:

My wife's Round 2 paring in the U140 was put up on the wall earlier so we wrote it down. It turns out that a result was put in wrong so it changed a few pairings, including Syringa's.

Kevin Stavely has just personally phoned us to tell us of the change.

Very impressive service and we thank you very much.

The ending still looks complicated but it certainly seems hard to see him losing that one.

There's still a lot of chess to be played today!

I realise I should be praising the organiser too. But I'm too distracted by wondering how much opponent specific preparation gets done in the U140! Am I being offensive to the middle and lower grading bands? I honestly assumed everyone under 180ish just turned up and played

44...Re6 was a surprising move.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Move with the times Paul! With computers and the internet, more and more people are preparing for their games, I guess the percentage of people that do dedicated preparation will increase in a linear way with respect to rating, where 100% of 2800+ players do specific prep to, say 30% of sub-2000s.

I've just plucked these numbers out of thin air and am probably hopelessly way out...

Can't remember the last time I did prep. The last congress I played in I was out of theory knowledge before move 5 in rd's 1 & 2. Much more fun then rattling out 10-15 moves of theory before stopping to think.

Wonder if anyone's going to put the results of the Major Open up on the Championship website?

Re 'The Forum Way", apart from plucking numbers out of thin air, there's also
"Demonstrating verbally that chess contains more than its share of people who could start an argument in an empty room..."
- possibly together with the corollary:
"...And keep it going for several days, too."

Perhaps they will ask for a 'contact number during the event' on the entry form in future

A really impressive number of pairings between players not on the same score. A function you might suppose of a very flat rating range across the middle of the tournament. A 100 point advantage is barely enough compensation for having the Black pieces so upsets are not a particular surprise.

It's good for second quartile players possibly looking for a norm run. After drawing with Howell, James Adair gets an IM this time.

James Adaire was 'lucky' to get the upfloat this time.

We had quite a discussion about whether to accelerate this year or not because of the field. I looked at both the accelerated and non-accelerated draw for potential norm seekers. With a 2380 average of opponents' requirement it seemed that a 'normal' first round draw would make this figure much harder to achieve. Hence the decision to accelerate.
