There's a way of making Nigel Short world champion, but it needs two changes. First you have to make Karpov regain his title in 1990 be beating Kasparov. Second you have to have someone beat Kasparov in the following series of Candidate matches. Nigel then reaches the final and meets and beats Karpov in 1993 in a similar manner to the semi finals of 1992. Finding someone who could beat Kasparov in the short match in 1991 or 1992 is a challenge.

After beating Karpov, a tired, or over-confident Short loses the Candidates' Final to Jan Timman, who subsequently joins with Kasparov in a breakaway from FIDE. FIDE, lacking a champion of their own, arrange a match between Short and Karpov, which is won by the former...
