There is an argument that Caruana has caught up with Aronian already.....

Looking at the recent games Caruana looks like the player causing more troubles to Carlsen, more than Anand and Aronian. Definitely by far more than the self-proclaimed challenger Nakamura.

Do you think Caruana will react better to his loss to Carlsen than Nakamura did after his recent losses? Interesting to see what Mick pointed out about Grischuk about to maybe reach new heights. Could he also potentially challenge Carlsen?

There are a number of younger players edging upwards. Yu Yangyi and Rapport.

There are 20 Russians with ratings over 2700, and now 5 Chinese players in that bracket. I wonder if that is the largest number ever from one country other than Russia. Is the day coming soon when China will have more elite Gms than Russia? (I presume Russia still leads with absolute number of active GMs?)

Looking back at this, it is safe to say that Caruana has bounced back with a vengeance and that loss to Carlsen didn't affect him at all.

By a very considerable distance, too (though I don't have up to date figures)

...gives 214 when you ask for Russian GMs. For China it is 34. India 36. England 35. Ukraine 81. Armenia 36. USA 82. Netherlands 33. Germany 82. France 46. Spain 43. Italy 12. Hungary 48. Bulgaria 34. Poland 38. I'm sure I've missed out some obvious large countries. Can't seem to find any country with more than 100 GMs except Russia. Total number of GMs from that search is 1461. (Downloading the entire database and sorting through it gives accurate figures, those above are including inactive players.)

Well, adding that all up gives 854, if my calculations are correct. That is, about 60% of all GMs come from the aforementioned 15 countries.
