Mamedyarov (if he gets a published rating over 2800) will be aged 32, the second oldest on the list by age they achieved this rating (which, like age, is only a number!).

If you scroll down, on the right hand side there is a list of Highest Ever Live Rating

For completeness, Giri was 20 at the time, and would have been the second-youngest after Carlsen. Presuming Giri does eventually break the 2800 barrier in a published list, he has still got around two years to do this before the current second-youngest (MVL at 25).

(EDIT [2 June 2017]: Noting here that I was completely wrong to say MVL was the second-youngest on the list - the second-youngest is in fact Caruana, who entered the 2800 club aged 22.)

Here is a real thing to bet on: will Carlsen's record of breaking 2800 at the age of 18 ever be broken, and has that person been born yet?

He now has a live rating of 2800.0 at the finish of the Moscow GP; I assume he won't play any more rated games this month, so you can add him to the list wef 1 June

As of 1 June 2017: a timeline for when the members (past and present) of the 2800 club (those with a FIDE rating of 2800 or above) first achieved that distinction, with their ages:

*July 2001 - Vladimir Kramnik (2802) aged 26 (peak - 2812; June 2016)
*January 2006 - Veselin Topalov (2801) aged 30 (peak - 2816; July 2015)
*April 2006 - Viswanathan Anand (2803) aged 36 (peak - 2817; March 2011)
*November 2009 - Magnus Carlsen (2801) aged 18 (peak - 2882; May 2014)
*November 2010 - Levon Aronian (2801) aged 28 (peak - 2830; March 2014)
*August 2014 - Fabiano Caruana (2801) aged 22 (peak - 2844; October 2014)
*December 2014 - Alexander Grischuk (2810) aged 31 (peak - 2810; December 2014)
*June 2015 - Hikaru Nakamura (2802) aged 27 (peak - 2814; July 2015)
*August 2016 - Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (2819) aged 25 (peak - 2819; August 2016)
*January 2017 - Wesley So (2808) age 23 (peak - 2822; February 2017)
*June 2017 - Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2800) age 32 (peak - 2804; January 2018)

The peak ratings are as of June 2017, and some may change later. Only five people have ever been above 2820 on a published rating list.

Mamedyarov's entry updated above. Anyone want to speculate who will go over 2800 next? Currently, 10 of the top 12 on the live rating list have been over 2800. The two that haven't are Svidler and Ding Liren, but I don't really see anyone making a push up towards the top of the rankings any time soon.

I think we have a while to wait. An exciting 2017 for younger juniors rising to 2500, but no-one in the 18-20 range making big strides at the moment.

Ding currently has a live rating of 2797.5 (having won 3 games in the Chinese league this week) and is now unbeaten for 288 days; he's 4th on the live list; a good performance in Norway might take him over 2800; he's 2840 over 28 games in 2018 (Giri is 2851 over 23 games)

Yes, I commented here some time ago that Iran is currently producing the best crop of junior chess players. The USA has a large population and is spending huge amounts of money, while Russia has, to say the least, a well estabIished infrastructure and tradition, but what is Iran doing so well?

• Chess in welcomed by middle-class families nowadays (media coverage and relative richness of the families compared to past might've helped ). In my city alone there is 12-13 clubs.
• IRCF openned a chess university in 1390 or 1391 AP.
• Iran has organized FIDE arbiters and FIDE TRG seminars and has FAs and FSTs, FTs, FIs, NIs.
• Chess books, videos and megazines are being diistributed in Telegram/whatsapp channels/groups and sold by chess websites in PDF or PGN or DJVU formts
• Some books were written by Iranian masters.
• My compatriot translators translated many books, of Dvoretzky, Dorfman, Yusupov, etc, as well as articles.
• Big tournaments are being held inside and around Iran (in Armenia, Azerbaijan, UAE, Turkey).
• Some Armenian and Azerbaijani trainers work in Iran, and some chessplayers may go to Azerbaijan for training.
• Iran used good trainers for national teams (late IGM Vasiukov, GM Sarkhan Guliev, GM Nigel Short, GM Miroshnichenko, and GM Ivan Sokolov are the ones I am aware of).
• Chess training has become a profession in Iran, and there will be progress when there is money.

These are some of the adjuvantss I can think of.

You've provided a good list. Can you provide more information about this one, which I cannot find by an internet search?

Almost all top, famous Iranian trainers teach units there, including GM Ghaemmaghami, IM&FST Harandi, IM&FT Mousavian, IM&FT Ghorbani, WGM&FT Shadi Paridar, and WFM&IA Shohreh Bayat (all of whom except IM Harandi are my friends).

You can enter it without an entrance exam, and after 2 years, you graduate with an Associate degree (I guess in physical education) and a grade C trainer's degree from Iran Chess Federation (IRCF). startintgg this year, it discontinued gives a Bachelor's and a grade B trainer's degree from Iran Chess Federation (IRCF).
Every year, it admits students for September and Junary semesters, like ordinary universities.
I was also tempted to register, but the tuition was a hindrance (also the distance-Tehran is some 1000 km to the NE- and the duration) . Besides, I hold an FI degree from FIDE.
