...and Gelfand resigns faced with mate or loss of his queen. Congratulations to Simon Williams on a great scalp, and may he experience a sales boom of his Dutch Defence publications!

Fantastic result, and he beat a 2600 yesterday too. International Director, take note!

What? Oh.

Selectors then.

Oh. Ok, selector ...

Go Simon!

Bit harsh Leonard's observations on the commercial position, I feel! It's not like this is some weird opening Simon took up yesterday.

If I won a nice game (alas, such occurrences are now long in the past) I wouldn't think it 'harsh' but a compliment if somebody wrote 'go buy the Guardian on Saturdays for Leonard's column'.

Hehe...I'm joyful.

Spent a long day pushing hard yards on reforms to the ECF. But this is why - support inspirational excellence!

Just a fabulous win by a decent bloke (over a decent bloke, I'd assume)

Yes, I'm looking forward to hearing how Gelfand's fabled courtesy stood up to the occasion. I'd imagine a suggestion of a post-mortem would have been a fair test of his self-control.

They don't like it up 'em, as one of our leading philosohpers used to say.

If I a chuck my 2ps worth in about the opening, I'd say that it's definitely a Classical Dutch, albeit one that shifts into a Stonewall formation. The game itself was highly reminiscent of Dumitrache - Williams, Montpellier 2003 - a game that crops up in a few Dutch books.

Here is the game from chessbomb can't find it on the official site.

37.Qg3 is a mistake in time trouble, 37.Rxb7 Qf6 38.c6 Rxd6 39.c7 Rc6 40. Rb8 Kf7 41.c8Q
Rxc8 42 Rxc8 unclear,is best according to Houdini
39.f5 loses (39.Kf3 apparently to keep going).
Great game from Simon.

btw Chesstv.com is doing very good live coverage of this event, although they sometimes
miss good games like this!

It doesn't do a board. I did a board, by putting the game between PGN tags.

For heaven's sake! Some of those 'club' teams could win the Olympiad

I've been wondering about this. Do any of these so called 'club teams' actually play together in any other events apart from this one?
