A new Chess Club in Nottinghamshire

Post by Peter Brace » Fri Oct 19, 2012 2:40 am

A new chess club has started in Oxton, Nottingham. Membership is FREE and everybody is welcome, including players that already have a club but would like to play other evenings too. ECF members can enter the club championship and have their games graded. The club meets on Monday evenings from 7pm onwards at the Green Dragon pub. The pub has disabled access and a free car-park.

Well done on the new club! And well done on choosing a pub with disabled access. I play in a pub with disabled access too. But the room for chess is up four flights of stairs! My point being: the pub may be OK, but is the chess room?

Thanks David. We have 2 rooms to use for the club, one of the rooms is ground floor level and has disabled access.

8 people turned up on Monday for the first meeting of the club, although I'm not sure if they will all be regulars. I could do with a few more new people coming down for the next few weeks while the club gets established. If anybody knows any players in the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire area that would like to come down on a Monday evening please tell them about Oxton chess club.

Players from other local clubs who would like to play extra chess are also very welcome.

Membership is free

6 people turned up last week at the club. If anybody knows anyone who could come to the club tomorrow evening (Monday) it would really help while the club gets established. The venue is really nice and the landlady kindly put on free food for us the last 2 weeks. Players from other local clubs who would like to play extra chess are also very welcome. Membership is free.

Good luck with your new chess club. I only know too well how difficult it can be to promote a chess club, something we're trying to do for our own chess club. Have you thought about joining a local league. At our club we have 4 teams in local leagues, the main league is the Wolverhampton League (a promotion and relegation league) the Cannock League (a team restricted graded league) and the Dudley League (an individual restricted graded league.)

Having a club championship helps. At our club we have 5 of our own tournaments, the graded club championship has the highest status.

A ladder championship (half an hour for the game, lowest graded player has the choice of colour, you can challenge anyone upto 5 places above you in the ladder, if you win you swap positions over, if you draw or lose the poisitions stay as they are,) and a handicap tournament, (higher graded player has 10 minutes, lower graded player has 10 minutes plus an extra minute for each points difference between the player, and has choice of colour.) The ladder championships and handicap tournaments are less formal, but do allow competitive matches to be played, and they are ungraded at our club.

The buzzer tournament (players move every 10 seconds as a buzzer sounds, not before, and not afterwards) and a 5 minute lightning tournament (both players have 5 minutes per game for all moves.) The buzzer tournament and the lightning tournament are held one evening a year.

Is the club still going? It is difficult to start up the club but stick at it.
