A friend of mine used to think that FM stood for "Friday Master" as they weren't strong enough to be an IM every day of the weekStewart Reuben wrote:Had FIDE at that time consulted me about FIDE Master, I would have advised very strongly against it. Only very knowledgeable people understand what it means. People have asked, in all seriousness, 'What has it got to do swith dogs?' Candidate Master is quite easy to understand. I wanted to introduce Elite Grandmaster but it got voted down.

Speaking personally, I like the title of Fide Arbiter (FA), as it suggests I am involved with the Football Association.

I always speak personally, quite literally, innit.
Sepp Blatter would agree with you Neville.

Neil, that shows a rather dogged approach.
Are you barking mad?

Jeb Bush's faltering campaign for the Republican nomination could be dumped altogether. Why? See here (sorry, you have to scroll right to the last paragraph).
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)

There was a chess theme (sort of) for the 'Halloween Pro Group Dance' section of Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1, week 6, 1 November 2015):
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p036vf3j
It was really a theme of the Red King and Red Queen, some sort of Alice Through the Looking Glass reference.
https://monkseal.wordpress.com/2015/11/ ... s-summary/
"...tonight starts with the annual Dark And Moody number. This year it’s Pasha and Ola serving as Red King and Red Queen over a chessboard of both black and white pros representing chess pieces, all dancing…like chess pieces. It’s very dramatic and theatrical, and in the end the white pieces win because Pasha and Ola wave and the other team fall over. Which isn’t how I remember most chess games ending, but there we are."
I saw a bit of it, and from memory it wasn't really of interest to chess players, but still interesting to see the theme used.

But inevitably
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

The board was not round the wrong way.
Some of the action took place with some pieces dancing off the board.
There were pieces of three different colours.
Thus, it wasn't chess as we know it, but a variant. Since we don't know the stipulated rules, it may include having a black square in the right hand corner.

Five live - Man City owners moving players & coaches (Viera) around the globe like chess grandmasters.
Some reference to Arsenal owners being amateurs in comparison. Certainly missed a turning point & tactical threats some years ago.
Is football ownership like some world championship correspondence chess game? Or is it just about the money, money?
