"This is speed chess and you were checkmated 300 moves ago" was the unlikely line from a computer hacker in tonight's episode of the new version of Hawaii Five 0.

Somebody needs to tell them that checkmate ends the game.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

That is Jovanka Houska v Jonathan Speelman at the 2004 Staunton Memorial. (0-1 in 69)

Maybe they should ask for an advertisement fee.

From last Saturday's 'Guardian':

Shame he wasn't at the club last night!
I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.

You could assume he's being ironic.

It's something of a non-story, since if Hou Yinfan hadn't played at Gibraltar and a male GM of equivalent rating had taken her place and achieved the same results, he would equally have faced 7 female players.

yes but someone who has no knowledge of chess and was reading the telegraph wouldnt know this and get the wrong nuance of the word. I think the point was she didnt play the womans to be there?

The protest was that she played 7 from 10 female players. Given that pairing systems take no account of gender, that can only be caused by the relative ratings.

You could argue that the pairing rules are wrong, but that requires a proposition of an alternative.

ok you are right. Shes from a traditionally chauvinistic culture so I hail her stand.
