Richard Branson usually wears his wristwatch on his left arm, so unless he switched arms on this occasion there is no question of the pic being reversed

Very good, worthy of Perry Mason. Bang to rights.

Perhaps Black moved first in this game, in which case the only anomaly is that everything that is normally white is black, and vice versa.

Quite often the picture editor will mirror the image about the y axis for aesthetic reasons not realising the implications for the content of the image.

It may be therefore that the board orientation was correct.
Isn't the point here that it was posted by Mr Branson, so there was no "picture editor" involved?
There is nothing stopping RB flipping the image if he feels it is better to have him on the right hand side.

Branson is left handed. Some left handed people wear their watch on their right hands. This might support the claim that the picture was flipped.
However, the cup handle is on Branson's left hand side. This strongly suggests that the picture was not flipped.

The balance of probabilities suggest that it was not flipped. If the image was higher resolution then the watch face could be inspected.

The school chess club nature of the position suggests that neither of them have a clue to what they are doing.

Picture flipped?

Look at the ring on the pinky of the left hand.

Here it is again on the pinky of the left hand.

The writng on cup is correct. Original picture was not flipped.

We are informed by Phil Neville that last night's England game was

Last night (actually to be more precise it was very early this morning) I watched 'The Killing' a 1956 Stanley Kubrick film.

It has a chess scene in it with Kola Kwariani (a wrestler and chess player). In the scene an argument
breaks out about whether or not a Rook can be won. One player is called a Patzer and he threatens to call Fisher!

It was not be a back handed compliment to Bobby because although he was media hot due to 'The Game of the Century'
it was not published in Chess Review and tagged TGOTC till December 1956. (even then the reader was sent to the wrong page - see below)

Here is YouTube link to the chess scene.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5Rzh8X ... er&list=UL

Sam Sloan also posts there.

This scene depicts the Chess and Checker Club of New York better known as "The Flea House" located in the Times Square Area on 42nd Street
near 7th Avenue. At that time the proprietor was named "Mr. Fisher". It was also known as "Fisher's". This had nothing to do with Bobby Fischer.

and if you are still here then wander across to:

https://www.redhotpawn.com/chess-blog/t ... %80%99.384

Where you see how the Chess Review readers were sent to the wrong game and Time Magazine's 1958 take on Bobby Fischer.

“A floppy, abrupt young gangle-shanks, he stumbles through the physical world of school
and subways and summer vacations in a tangle of arms and legs not quite under control.”

Nigel Short just got a mention on the cricket commentary on Talk Sport 2. Apparently he met the commentator David LLoyd at an Indian restaurant yesterday and gave the impression of being cricket mad.
