Re: Media comments on chess
I think there is only one chess game Turing played that is extant, it is fair to say that the quality was not excessively high.

Note that the game is actually played by "Turochamp", the computer that Turing devised with David Champernowne. Turing was certainly a fine runner, on the fringes of selection for international marathon honours.

Re: Media comments on chess
According to chessgames, as above, NO computer was involved in the game.
It was an algorithm worked out on paper. That is pretty amazing.
But a human must have resigned when White was about to go queen for rook down.

Edinburgh Evening News today (page 33)
A piece in the 'Remember when...' section with a few pictures about Smyslov 1969 simul.
In a larger scan I think this is Alastair White (he got a draw.)

To clarify, I meant in the traditional meaning of "computer", not what we would currently think of. In those days, staff doing calculations would be called "computers". And of course, RAF used "Dalton Computers" for a long time, and indeed they are still used.

Is this the same gentleman who was at the BCF in some financial role in the mid 1980s? If so, I seem to remember him standing up to RDK OBE on various matters. (And I suspect there are more than a few similarities between Johnson and Keene).

Oh yes, that's him. He was BCF Finance Director. He's quoted in a Kingpin piece.Jonathan Rogers wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 10:38 amIs this the same gentleman who was at the BCF in some financial role in the mid 1980s?
