I know he is only eighteen, but that was spectacularly poor judgement.

I am reminded of Groucho Marx arriving at US Immigration and declaring on his form "occupation - smuggler". However, Groucho was by then at a stage of his career when he could afford such misbehaviour.

He is thought to have subsequently won four British championships.
Eh?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I have flagged the recent posts to Carl as I don't think they should be discussed here. This is a personal view and I will accept Carl's judgement - while the matter is in the public domain (and contempt of court laws do not apply) a talented young player has likely made an embarrassing error of judgement and we should encourage privacy.

As an aside I can't find any reference to the incident on the BBC news page so only the Daily Mail (a vile bigoted rag) is giving it prominence.

Without wanting to get into a slanging match I'll answer the points raised.

Justin - I referred to him as a "young player". The particular contempt of court law I was referring to is the one that would prevent the Mail (or any other publication) accepting online comments that might prejudice any trial rather than the one that would prevent his naming if he was a minor.

Tim - I've never hidden my political affiliations!

Then it obviously didn't happen. Why is everyone getting so excited?

You don't have to have any particular political affiliations to be aware that the Mail produces a lot of garbage journalism. You just have to have a preference for journalism that isn't garbage.

And yet nevertheless an adult.

Old enough to vote, therefore old enough to make responsible decisions - or at least be held to account for irresponsible decisions. This one does look like a doozy.

I wonder if it makes people less smart

Or am I just cynical about my interactions with chess players?
