Our match commentators here are not just giving us "partida de ajedrez" for the second time in the match, but seeing as substitutions are about to be made, "sacrificiar un peón" as well.
Forgive me for asking. I only did Spanish up to GCSE standard many years ago. I recognise the word "ajedrez" is Chess. What's the translation for the rest of it.
By the way Charlie Storey is back on the forum scene.
He has just posted in the Advert Category.
Something about Chess in Gozo and "Paradise with a chess coach".

Thanks Mick.
Had my second vaccine yesterday afternoon in Blackpool which I brought forward online from mid July.
Sad news from Blackpool last week about the passing of the boxer Brian London.

*Otte 3-6 6-4 6-4 4-6 1-4 Murray
Superb from Murray. A drop shot grabs Otte out of position with Murray guessing perfectly where it's going to go and putting away the next one. Fourth-dimensional chess there from the Briton.

From the BBC text commentary on Andy Murray's match:-

I have no idea what they mean by fourth dimensional chess!

If someone is described as playing 4D chess, that means they are incredibly smart and making moves that cannot be understood by ordinary people. Donald Trump was also said to have been playing 4D chess during his Presidency by a number of media bellends.

I vaguely recall a TV episode of Batman where Robin came across our hero playing 4-D chess. According to The Complete Chess Addict his response was something like "Holy Reshevsky! 3-D chess is hard enough for me!" (though I admit not remembering that bit)
"Set up your attacks so that when the fire is out, it isn't out!" (H N Pillsbury)

Isn't that 3D to be pedantic?

Mr Spock was good at 3D chess.

Not sure about Yoda, though.

If you play with a chess clock, surely that would be a fourth dimension. Thus it needs 5 dimensions to be really advanced. Or, of course, 0 if played in one's head.

There was a game called 5d chess for those interested. Creating parallel universe boards and moving in time, a bit like in Back to the Future:

Norrie vs Bolt today at Wimbledon, BBC commentator said, "It is chess on grass", after a spectacularly good rally.

Daily Telegraph Friday page 11 Boy, 12, becomes youngest ever chess Grandmaster by Leon Watson.
Nothing new in this article, but quite accurate, though not written by either Pein or Adams.

On the other hand, today on Page 20. Draconian restrictions on schools are pointless by Robert Dingwall.
'Any chess player will tell you that the end game is the trickiest part of the match.'
NOPE. Some might say the trickiest part of the game, but I doubt very many.

Perhaps he means "knowing when to resign".

This could apply either to the Minister personally or to abandoning a disastrous policy.
