Re: Media comments on chess
At the 1992 murder trial of Paul Ferris a guard heard Ferris and Woodman (a witness for the prosecution)
playing chess in solitary confinement by shouting the moves out to each other.
This was offered as proof that Ferris knew Woodman well enough for Ferris to tell Woodman he was guilty.
Ferris denied he ever played Woodman at chess but happened to be listening in as Woodman played someone
else at chess and Ferris had to to explain to them the "...intricacies of castling."

Commentator at last night's Russia v Egypt World Cup match - "This has become a chess match in the home town of Boris Spassky - remember him?"

Jonathan Pearce, God help us all
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

The late Charles Krauthammer on his chess addiction.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Maybe he should have spent more time on chess and less on promulgating neoconservative dogma.

Today's Sports section of the Daily Telegraph. Note by Simon Briggs about Andy Murrray's win at Eastbourne against Stan Wawrinka.
'Eastbourne's centre court resembled the perfect checkerboard, witrh its neat mowed stripes, and Murray controlled it so intelligently that he could have been playing chess. ..Murray won 6-1, 6-3.

David. I think you should tell Chris Fegan right away. It will solve all his ECF problems.

Some time ago
John McEnroe said 'unlike chess where you can tip the king over. Here you hve to play until the bitter end. But here you get to shake the hand of the King.'
I did see Dennis Taylor resign in the World Championship the year AFTER he had won it. But it was only one ball from the end.
I think it is only the mind games where people resign. it is true for bridge when you can see the final outcome.
When chess is a spectator sport, I think people resign too early.

I think it was Larsen who said that GMs should only resign when even a fairly weak club player can understand why.

Ronnie O'Sullivan famously "resigned" when 4-1 down to Stephen Hendry in the best-of-17 frames Quarter Finals of the 2006 UK Championship.Stewart Reuben wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 12:27 pmI did see Dennis Taylor resign in the World Championship the year AFTER he had won it.
