Madonna and chess is old news

And, of course, there is a Scottish connection.

Madge's hands aren't looking that great either. One of the few body parts where you can't have "work done" to any notable effect.Tim Spanton wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 9:57 pmThe dog under the table looks past its use-by dateKevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Fri Jul 24, 2020 9:32 pmhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/a ... rooms.html

Local columnist talks of "speed chess" while commenting on recent tumultuous events in NZ politics:

Rory Burns is still all twitches, crazy pick-ups and rush-of-blood offside slashes, but he concentrates like Magnus Carlsen and is as unflappable as his piratical face furniture is flamboyant.

Last night, Monday 3rd August 8pm to 9pm Channel 4
TV Programme called " Devon And Cornwall "
There was a place called Clovelly, North West Devon.
It featured a lobster fisherman called Steven Param.
When he was in his boat collecting lobsters he said
" It's like a game of chess. I make my move, they make their move. Generally they win."

Dettol advert, includes old vs young chess game.
I found this accidentally, looking for a report on a medicine!

Re: Media comments on chess
BBC Sport are running an article on Branko Zebec, a former Bayern Munich coach. The article has a paragraph which states "Those close to Zebec witnessed in despair as his life and career fell apart. His talents were broad - he was a brilliant chess player who excelled in the study of maths and physics. He was capable of winning over footballers, but couldn't beat alcoholism."
There didn't seem to be anything else in the article to corroborate his brilliance at chess and I can't seem to locate anything either. Does anyone know if it is true or is it just another media fiction?

Just about to post a link to that, so you beat me to it Chris; interesting to see that Bayern had little success before the late 60s, considering how dominant they are now

Re: Media comments on chess
Now all the 2nd hand charity shops are open and choc full of covid lock-down donations I have stocked
up on my 4 for £1.00 Sci-Fi books and picked up a few chess books along the way. (one doubler and a trebler).
Whilst here I will pass on advice of what NOT to do in a charity shop if looking for chess books.
https://www.redhotpawn.com/chess-blog/t ... -jokes.457
Just finished reading one of the 4 for a quid books: 'Artemis' by Andy Weir.
It was his follow up to 'The Martian' which was made into a film (right pic) with the
Magnus Carlsen look-a-like playing the part of the human left behind on Mars.
Both good but preferred 'The Martian.'
In Artemis, set on the Moon in the 2080's, the heroine (to be played in the film by a top female chess playing look-a-like)
gets a message from a boy telling her he has joined a chess club and has a rating of 1124 adding; "...that is not very good."

1975 Soviet cartoon Vasilisa Mikulishna, in which the eponymous heroine rescues her husband from the Prince's dungeon in Kiev by disguising herself as a man and - in part - by winning (12:24) a game of chess.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Not sure if music videos count, but this is the official video for "The Future of History", which is partially about Kasparov vs Deep Blue.
The Band's name is rather rude, so don't let children watch the video. It's safe to listen to the song, which is quite jolly, not as aggressive as some works of The Disturbed e.g.

Kevin, where did you find that? What is your natural habitat?
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a QR code stamped on a human face — forever.
