Mention of Nottingham 1936 on Corrie. Amazing!
Yes, was genuinely surprised to hear that. Was the chess "game" any more realistic than usual?

I didn't follow the game.

I was also amazed to hear the name of Emmanuel Lasker uttered; surely a first in the history of soaps?

The chess games in Corrie are all actual games, or minor adaptations of actual games

That's the advantage of having an ex MCF President on set having prepared them

You always get the players saying check, which no serious player ever does, but this is excusable for the dramatic effect.

Chess has to be made dramatic somehow!

I never watch Corrie, but I assume the players aren't exactly supposed to be serious; enthusiastic maybe

From what Matthew told me, I wasn't expecting the chess to appear until New Year's Day; he speaks highly of how friendly the cast are

I don't know how "serious" some of my opponents are, but I hear check announced in tournament games, usually when the checker thinks the move is particularly strong

Not a good practical move.

By keeping silent, we may induce an unwary opponent into an illegal, losing move.

Going back a while, wasn't one of the characters in Corrie a big fan of Mickey Adams, even naming some puppet or pet after him?

All credit to the Manchester folk for facilitating this.

Though this only actually applies in quick chess?

Proper chess too. You can invoke the touch move rule if the opponent has missed the check. This can lead to ruinous material loss.

I actually benefited from this in a county match on November 7th. My opponent did not notice a discovered check but made a rook move. Unfortunately for him the rook could also block the check with the aforementioned ruinous material loss. He didn't at first seem to realise that the rook move was compulsory and I felt rather embarrassed by insisting on it.

Ah, discovered check is a sneaky one. You definitely don't want to announce that!

Of course, I was thinking of *automatically* losing.

Don't be - it's his fault for not concentrating!

Something called The Chessboard is on Radio Three right now - I've missed the start so I'll maybe catch up with it tomorrow. I suspect though from the information given that, give or take Lewis Carroll, the theme may be "black and white" in various iterations rather than chess as such. However I am advised that early on somebody promises us that we will "zigzag like a knight, soar like a bishop". Which is promising.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
