I have known of 4 cases where people have died at the chessboard., well may be 5 - but I think that was just a story. Poker just once.
But broken bones only once in chess - and never in poker. Neil has intrigued me.

There was the Notts v G Man U150 (?) match at Sherwood a few years back, where we lost a player on the way to an emergency appendix operation, and also Dave Pardoe had to stop playing due to a back problem; the Notts player sportingly agreed to a draw

Closing Gambit . It's amazing the number of feature length films where chess plays a major role. I haven't even seen the new 'Magnus' film yet.
Could it be there are more such films than for any other sport?

I was playing in a match against Grantham last night and was discussing this with club stalwart Fred Jones. In a match between Sutton-in-Ashfield (now Ashfield) Chess Club and Grantham which was held in our upstairs club room, Fred's father Arthur fell down a flight of stairs having misjudged where the steps were as he was wearing new bi-focals. Arthur fractured a number of ribs. His opponent gracefully resigned the game and all the other games were immediately agreed as draws. Fred told me that his father was in such pain that they had to detour to Newark Hospital and that his father was kept as an in-patient overnight. This would have been around 1980 I guess.

The other match where I was in attendance was a SCCU county match where I was representing Hampshire against Berkshire at Bracknell. As usual this was played in a hall where there was a raised stage on which a number of games took place. One of the visiting Hampshire players fell off the stage and broke his ankle. I recall that Ian Stenhouse took the player to hospital and that Hampshire had to concede both games. This would have been in 1970 - I can probably work out the exact date.

Garry's favourite number 13 as well.

After the dubious 12. c5, you have to play 13. cxd6 to stay in the game a bit worse. 11. .. b6 is slightly unusual and you probably have to meet it by taking on a5.

It seems scarcely a week passes these days without some football commentator
somewhere comparing the game they are watching to a game Chess. I first heard
it used way back in 1965 during the cup final between Liverpool and Leeds.

Tennis, Cricket and Snooker are frequently compared to chess by some hack
who is bored but a few weeks ago I hear one that seemed to be apt. Bowls.

Close. You mate the white jack with one piece (bowl) using the other
pieces (bowls) to keep your opponents men away. (blocking).

I remember reading about a newspaper report from 1962 which described the Spurs-Rangers Cup-Winners' Cup tie as "a game of electric chess". Can't recall now which book I saw it in, except it was one of those pot-pourri ones that looked at all aspects of chess, including writing that was either about the game or referred to it. I never saw the newspaper story itself, either. Might have been Geoffrey Green in The Times, which we didn't take.
