This is a bit tenuous but I was watching The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane (1976) and is that a boxed chess set under Jodie Foster's cup of tea?

Image
Equally tenuous, Blow Out (1981) features what appears to be a chessboard in a number of scenes (this is a fairly poor shot and indeed choice of shot but it's down by John Travolta's feet).

"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

In the BT highlights show later one of the presenters suggested that Leicester City would "turn stalemate into checkmate" when teams returned to the King Power stadium. I didn't feel a 'phone call at 11.15pm to inform them that stalemate would have ended the game would be appropriate and promptly fell asleep whilst the delights of Sporting Braga v Roma and their ilk were shown.

I have seen a player who was stalemated resign thinking he had been checkmated.
It only came to light a few days after the game.

Question: if the player had appealed, say about 20 minutes after the game, would he have got his ½ point.

True he did resign but the game was over the moment stalemate appeared on the board, before he resigned.

That depends on the arbiter. The result of the game was a draw, so the relevant rule is 8.7:
At the conclusion of the game both players shall sign both scoresheets, indicating the result of the game. Even if incorrect, this result shall stand, unless the arbiter decides otherwise.

Ah, I stand at least partially corrected. I wonder what the other player would say, by the way. Maybe "I also thought it was checkmate honest" and it might even be true.

Incidentally is this going to be one of those situations where there is not in fact any arbiter?

No arbiter, It was a league game. I thought briefly about making an appeal but we won the match 4-2.

After football comes tennis................

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/56137220

If 33-year-old Djokovic is to win his 18th major, he says he will have to solve the puzzles set by "master chess player" Medvedev.

"I'm ready for the battle for the toughest match of the tournament, without a doubt," said the Serb.

"Medvedev is playing at an extremely high quality. He's the man to beat.

"I heard Jim Courier calling him a master chess player because of the way he tactically positions himself on the court, and it's true. You know, he's definitely a very smart tennis player."

Last night's episode of Celebrity Mastermind BBC1 5.35pm until 6.10pm.
In the general knowledge round, the impressionist Jon Culshaw was asked the following question:
"The castle, is another name for which chess piece? "
I'm afraid Jon answered incorrectly by saying " knight ".

He has been mentioned on here before as a "celebrity chess player" who might actually be above novice level.

Article by Zoe Williams in the "Graun":

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyl ... et-me-lose.
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)
