This is a bit tenuous but I was watching The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane (1976) and is that a boxed chess set under Jodie Foster's cup of tea?

Equally tenuous, Blow Out (1981) features what appears to be a chessboard in a number of scenes (this is a fairly poor shot and indeed choice of shot but it's down by John Travolta's feet).

In the BT highlights show later one of the presenters suggested that Leicester City would "turn stalemate into checkmate" when teams returned to the King Power stadium. I didn't feel a 'phone call at 11.15pm to inform them that stalemate would have ended the game would be appropriate and promptly fell asleep whilst the delights of Sporting Braga v Roma and their ilk were shown.

It only came to light a few days after the game.

Question: if the player had appealed, say about 20 minutes after the game, would he have got his ½ point.

True he did resign but the game was over the moment stalemate appeared on the board, before he resigned.

That depends on the arbiter. The result of the game was a draw, so the relevant rule is 8.7:

At the conclusion of the game both players shall sign both scoresheets, indicating the result of the game. Even if incorrect, this result shall stand, unless the arbiter decides otherwise.

Ah, I stand at least partially corrected. I wonder what the other player would say, by the way. Maybe "I also thought it was checkmate honest" and it might even be true.

Incidentally is this going to be one of those situations where there is not in fact any arbiter?

No arbiter, It was a league game. I thought briefly about making an appeal but we won the match 4-2.
