Media comments on chess
Re: Media comments on chess
Midsomer Murders at a chess tournament again. One advantage of my short term memory loss an hour in is no idea who done it

If that's the one I have seen in the past, at least its portrayal of chess is rather more realistic than quite a few similar efforts.

There's a kid playing chess in the sponsor's credits before ITV's Tipping Point as well.

Barclays - gxf8=Q+ looks a good reply to the move about to be played.

And today's chess player in the news for discreditable business practices is Dave Hackett.
I was going to quote chunks of it but really, there's a lot of it and it's all so loathsome you might as well read it all.
On TV tomorrow (Monday) if you live on the right region.

At least they didn't call him a chess master (or indeed reference the game at all).JustinHorton wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 9:22 pmAnd today's chess player in the news for discreditable business practices is Dave Hackett.

Re: Media comments on chess
Watched first episode of Hunters. Al Pacino is mated straight from the opening (Fool's Mate)
Then a chess game is played with prisoners from a concentration camp acting as the pieces on a giant chessboard,
(A field with the grass mowed into a chequered pattern) and the pieces have to execute who they are told to capture.
A protest have been lodged from the Auschwitz Memorial in Poland
Inaccurate Holocaust 'Death Chess' Scenes is part of the headline which then
goes onto to refer to a chess piece not being captured but ''knocked off the board.'

Oh for sure. I only noticed because the story popped up on a friend's Facebook, due I think to either their child or a friend of their child being one of the ripped-off employees. And I saw the photo and thought isn't that Dave Hackett?John Clarke wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 9:58 pmAt least they didn't call him a chess master (or indeed reference the game at all).JustinHorton wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 9:22 pmAnd today's chess player in the news for discreditable business practices is Dave Hackett.

Hmm, you mean it's not actually a "Media comment on chess" but simply something which should be in the public domain?JustinHorton wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2020 6:32 amOh for sure. It's a media story involving a chessplayer

Yes, I understand that - and late payment or [worse still] non-payment of wages undoubtedly causes hardship, as well as being unlawful, so I'm certainly not condoning it. To be clear, I'd never heard of Dave Hackett before this arose and I don't know the full story here - maybe the café chain has been teetering on the brink of bankruptcy for years. But I'm vaguely uncomfortable over when it's appropriate to use this forum to highlight someone's less-than-desirable but non-chess activity. I can see that, if someone was a murderer or a paedophile, there would be an overwhelming public interest argument - and the same probably applies to the story, in a separate thread on this forum and involving entirely different people, concerning considerable sums of pension fund money. Maybe I'm just being old-fashioned but I'm much less sure in this present case.
