The song 'That's Life:
I've been a puppet, pauper, pirate, a poet, pawn and a King.
I've been up and down...

Perhaps Malcolm needs to let them know that even the most average club player manages to think two or three moves ahead!
One of Henry Winter's more junior colleagues, Jonathan Liew, has some interest in chess.

It's easy enough to see that n=10, you just need to know your 9 times table. That's not the question though, which is can you make a connection with the algebra? The key point to me was the n*(n-1) pattern from drawing balls out of a bag. I think there's a missing second part to the question, which asks what is n. The more difficult question would have been to not put in the equation as a clue, but just given the probability and asked what was n.

Maths exam questions can be like why X to play and win positions are easier than reaching the position over the board. It's easier to spot something if you know it's there. There again if you are in a practical game, you may have been manoeuvring to make something work.

"So few women play chess, they seem to have no grasp for it" muttered the arch villain Wo-Fat to a young girl he'd kidnapped in Hawaii Five-O Series 3, Episode 1: And a Time to Die.

"Bizarrely, he (Lee's father) was also awarded the Order of the Nile from the Egyptians. ‘I never found out how,’ Lee said. ‘He said he got it for playing chess with King Fuad.’"

None of the top 100 grandmasters are over 50 years old, half are under 30.

Yes, I saw that quote and knew about the chess, but wasn't sure what the situation is in bridge at the top level, no doubt someone will let us know

I was pleased to see chess on the BBC Sport section of their website, albeit I understood why and don't expect regular appearances

Chess was an exhibition sport in the Sydney Olympic Games. The problem with introducing minority sports into the event is not that they aren't respected, it is that the logistics of running the Olympics is so complex, adding in yet more sports provides a problem. That is what the secretary of the British Olympic Movement told me. I said, 'But wouldn't it mean that less money would be available to support our competitors in all the sports?' He said, 'No. I is up to each particular sport to raise their funding.
