Can't see the comparison myself - Hitler was very much in favour of a united Europe

Presumably they were acquainted at some point via the Spectator?JustinHorton wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 11:18 amThey may share some friends as well as some characteristics.Jonathan Rogers wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 10:38 amIs this the same gentleman who was at the BCF in some financial role in the mid 1980s? If so, I seem to remember him standing up to RDK OBE on various matters. (And I suspect there are more than a few similarities between Johnson and Keene).

Neither can I (comprehend the comparison).Tim Spanton wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 11:50 amCan't see the comparison myself - Hitler was very much in favour of a united Europe
And, as Theresa embarrassingly waltzes off in the wake of Cameron's cringing caramba, I'm reminded of -

Also Dominic Lawson of course, namechecked by ajohnson when speaking at the London Chess Classic. The Spectator itself is very much an old boys' network in itself.Jonathan Rogers wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 11:53 amPresumably they were acquainted at some point via the Spectator?JustinHorton wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 11:18 amThey may share some friends as well as some characteristics.Jonathan Rogers wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 10:38 amIs this the same gentleman who was at the BCF in some financial role in the mid 1980s? A caller to LBC Radio put it to James O'(lier than thou)Brien that Bozo and his new chief advisor, Dominic Cummings, had both worked at the Spectator - something that the chief mouthpiece of remain doubted.
Meanwhile on that paragon of polity, the BBC, mention was made of men playing chess in cafes during episode 3 of The Great Romantic (a new biography of Neville Cardus) -

By my count he's written seven articles for them, which I wouldn't really count as working there, though it's not peanuts either.John McKenna wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 2:23 pmA caller to LBC Radio put it to James O'(lier than thou)Brien that Bozo and his new chief advisor, Dominic Cummings, had both worked at the Spectator
Of course, what "working at" means these days may be a bit harder to define than it used to be, though I'd reckon if you have a regular column, you do, even if you never physically show up there. (So by that definition Ray works there, though you could challenge that on other grounds, notably the unlikelihood that somebody so indolent writes all the words that appear under his name.)

Re: Media comments on chess
Amin stepped away completely from chess a few years ago now; the MCF very much valued his contributions over the years, and he was very helpful to me when I was PresidentAngus French wrote: ↑Thu Jul 25, 2019 10:08 amMohammed Amin has been in the news recently. See here (and also here and here). There's no mention of chess but Mohammed is an ECF member and has represented Manchester Chess Federation at ECF meetings.

Now he's being pushed out of politics on principle - his.
Of course, if he had none he could have hoped to rise like a rocket in the new administration of nepotism & cronyism.

Film featuring a chess scene with Liam Neeson, who famously has “A very particular set of skills”. I don’t know the film at all but the chess picture that’s on the BBC website looks quite authentic.

Old news, obviously - but I discovered these by accident - Bobby Fischer in 1958 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN1FcljFSjY
and 1972 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIE3CFNpZ5Y
Fascinating

I think I may have seen those before. But thank for bringing them back. It shows unequivocally that Bobby wasn't autistic.
