The "Kinematograph Weekly" seems a good source of material and we're only up to 1915!

Let Ivan Sokolov treat you to a short anecdote
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

And the British Newspaper Archive has just emailed me to say that I can search "The Kinematograph Weekly" on their site...

I'll leave it to Gerard!

"In the seven years it’s taken me to get justice from the Met, we [the wider group of falsely accused celebrities] have all been playing chess with the BBC, and one day we will say “checkmate”. We all know who [the] people [responsible] are."

Interview with Paul Gambaccini over the false accusations made about him, and his successful legal case against Metropolitan Police.

Here's an antidote to the Netflix hit 'The Queen's Gambit' from The Halifax Evening Courier of Friday 21 December 1928.

Wednesday 4 November on ITV4 in Champion of Champions snooker, the commentate started saying,'Like a young chess player...'
Unfortunately the telephone rang and it was a rather important call, so I missed the rest of the sentence.

Comments comparing snooker or tennis with chess are often more appropriate. These sports have more in common with ours.

Telegraph online today
Review of The Queens Gambit
"No abuse, no harassment, no sexism – the decent men who make The Queen's Gambit a genuine TV rarity"

It is interesting how the two games have entirely opposite meanings of the word 'tactical'.
In chess if you were to talk about game being tactical you would think of dashing open positions and free flowing attack by both sides but in snooker a tactical game refers to a closed game with a general lack of break building and mostly negative play.
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Hi Joey,

I have in the passed used how prematurely releasing the tension the centre can be
likened to how snooker players tend to avoid whacking and scattering the pack of reds.
They only do it when they are positive it will lead to their advantage and needs perfectly timed.

Tennis has no comparison to chess. The rule about a second serve is akin to taken a move back.

They have opposite impressions, but I'd argue that there is actually a strong thematic similarity: in both, a tactical game is one where you're very focused on detailed calculation of the immediate situation, whereas a positional one is one where you're looking ahead to what in general the position will look like a few moves down the line.

Sorry to post this late.
Last Saturday 31st October on BBC1.
Rugby Union Six Nations Wales v Scotland.
After 22 minutes, Scotland were leading 3 to 0.
Jonathan Davies the former Welsh Rugby player and now commentator said "This is like a game of Chess".
