From Kevin Spraggett's column.

http://www.spraggettonchess.com/fide-jo ... th-motiva/

"Motiva and FIDE have been hiding a little secret from the rest of the chess world. It turns out that
Motiva has been organizing a women’s rapid tournament each year (since 2017) in St. Petersburg."

I found this, a mini report/advert on the 2019 event.

https://motiva.health/patient/blog/motiva-chess-2019/

Just take the money and thank them for their interest in promoting chess.
There will be a few unoriginal jokes flying about for a while but IMO it's not as silly as some football sponsors
which leave themselves open to laddish comments. (guffaw-guffaw)

etc..etc..and a Greek football club, Voukefalas, are/were sponsored by a brothel.

I think my chess pieces have been watching too much football.
Yesterday a knight took a pawn and they all moved to the corner to celebrate.

I wonder what team they support. ManCHESSter United?

I thought the red pawn had been sent off.
They might support CHESSter City instead.

I was slightly surprised to hear that Nigel Short was going to be interviewed on Classic FM and they were very excited about it.

Mystery solved

Hi Simon,

I could have made a yellow card/red card gag with my yellow and red set. Missed that one.

Other possible teams, Bishop Auckland, Queens Park Rangers, WoKING...

But I'll settle for this team, their nickname is The Rooks. (the name of their home ground is The Dripping Pan.)

There's always this lot, up in Shropshire. B H Wood once said that's where his business ought to have been based.

(Surprised Geoff didn't have QUEEN's Park on his list - perhaps because they're based in That Other City?)

Yeah, Geoff missed that one.
Do they still play at Hampden Park?
Geoff also missed another in Scotland, Queen of the South, who play in Dumfries.

in the Amateur Cup Final Crook Town (Rook Town) have beaten both King's Lynn (1901) and Bishop Auckland (1954)

The Amateur Cup is no longer played for. The last winners were Bishop's Stortford who won it in 1974.
Bishop Auckland hold the record for winning it 10 times.

I'm surprised Jack R missed the town of Castle Cary in south Somerset.

A bit of a tenuous link - Morecambe FC, aka 'the Shrimps', are known jocularly on the other side of the Bay as 'the prawns'. This brings to mind the famous chess scene from 'Bottom'.
