It would have more credibility if it didn't quote Agon's wild extrapolation as fact.Chris Rice wrote:Just checked Chessdom site today Matt and they seem to be getting more sophisticated on the viewer tracking figures

This is much better - at least they quote some sources and admit where they're simply guessing. I've asked them whether they've got a link to the 'official' TV figures.Chris Rice wrote:Just checked Chessdom site today Matt and they seem to be getting more sophisticated on the viewer tracking figures

Got to be good news for chess whichever way you slice them up.
Personally, I wouldn't count people picking up a newspaper that happens to have a report, or watching a news show with a 2 minute chess slot, as 'following' or even 'watching' the match but maybe others would.
I also agree with Roger that using the 600m figure without question leads one to wonder how much scrutiny they've given the other numbers.

The problem with using such a method is that it would give similarly enhanced numbers for obscure Olympic disciplines that also get their five minutes of fame every four years.Matt Fletcher wrote: Personally, I wouldn't count people picking up a newspaper that happens to have a report, or watching a news show with a 2 minute chess slot, as 'following' or even 'watching' the match but maybe others would.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet (my non-chess-playing daughter alerted me to it):
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25000282
It concerns apparent sabotage (by deliberate bad moves) of a Norway versus the Rest of the World online crowdsourced game organised by a Norwegian newspaper.

Clearly nobody who actually wanted to establish how many people are interested in the match would.Matt Fletcher wrote: Personally, I wouldn't count people picking up a newspaper that happens to have a report, or watching a news show with a 2 minute chess slot, as 'following' or even 'watching' the match but maybe others would.

No doubt you mean 'anybody on here', but with this report - as with much else - a certain RDK was ahead of the game. He described the report as "amazing" iirc.

'Amazing': the all-purpose meaningless adjective of the modern era. I think RDK may have been ahead of the curve in the use of that word as well.Jonathan Bryant wrote:Clearly nobody who actually wanted to establish how many people are interested in the match would.Matt Fletcher wrote: Personally, I wouldn't count people picking up a newspaper that happens to have a report, or watching a news show with a 2 minute chess slot, as 'following' or even 'watching' the match but maybe others would.

The BBC reports on Carlsen's victory:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25057654
Did you know that Anatoly Karpov was the youngest player to win the title? Me neither. (It's possible that the error will be corrected in a later update - this version of the report was posted at 15:23 on 22 November.)

The youngest player to win the title was in fact Anatoly Kasparov.

Corrected again - now Garry Kasparov.
However:
"Anand needed a straight three-game win to keep his title but entering the competition on Friday he conceded that it would take a miraculous turnaround to keep his chances alive."

A schism in the chess-boxing world.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisstokelwalk ... hessboxing
Apparently the English/London organisation has either left or been expelled from the world body.

Well found, RdC. There's enough in that one article to keep the S&B crowd in copy for months. It has everything: sleaze, shabby buildings, political in-fighting, Tim Woolgar, raving lunacy and a puffing Penguin

Susan Polgar was interviewed about Carlsen's victory by Eddie Mair on Radio 4's PM at about 17:20, not much of interest in the interview. There was some gentle mockery of the match commentary just before the chat.
