I was reading "New in Chess" 2020 (5) and it mentioned the song, so naturally I aimed at YouTube!

"It's been a bit of a chess match, though, hasn't it?" BT Sport's Ian Darke on Wolves - Sevilla: 0-0 after 80+mins

I may be a little tardy with this spot, but Marco Polo on Kublai Khan's capital Khanbaliq: "The city is laid out by squares, as a chessboard is, and is so beautiful and so skillfully planned that in no way would it be possible to tell of it."

MARKY and the SWAN

A children's story written by LOUISE FORBES, published by Impala in 2007. Louise is the Mother of Cathy Forbes Warwick, the strong English woman player. Cathy has recently been re-publicising the work.
It tells the story of a little boy, Marky, who befriends a swan, to their mutual benefit. Marky is probably a thinly disguised Cathy.

Includes the following:-

Playing alongside current Everton winger Bernard and former Manchester City striker Jo, Ronaldinho scored four and assisted seven as Atletico reached the Libertadores final for the first time in the club's history.

"It's like playing chess with someone who can put you in checkmate in three moves," Jo told Brazilian TV in 2016. "In fact, he told me if he couldn't put me through on goal three times per game, he'd buy me a crate of beer."

Sticking with football, Hull City Twitter has pictures at an Edinburgh hotel of players playing chess

Hearts are not allowed to train in their own city but Hull can travel from England for reasons that presumably make sense to someone

Specifically this. One Richard Palliser points out the necessary.

The Sunday Telegraph demonstrating that online chess players are making more money than those playing Fornite or Call of Duty so the gamers are arguing that chess is not an e-sport anyway. Image

Technically, the prize money on offer is only available for a select few; if anything it is just a private wealth fund at present

“Just came across a remarkable book, Homo Erudiens by Renato Tribuiani; a training manual for those wishing to master both chess and rugby, with diagrams showing similar combinations in both. Realising how rarely I hear chess commentators say: "It's a game of rugby out there."

Chess Poem
by Bob Cowley Also in AC Newsletter

Chess
pieces dance
in changing patterns;
drama, intrigue and mystery
for those who know

Good chess players
can their clarity
at the board
pierce life's fogs
away from it?
they wonder also

Veteran chess
too old to play well?
the abyss looms -
but wait;
a lucky escape
and maybe persistence
can still find treasure
