'Michael Deacon is not satirical'. I'd not heard of him, the Daily Telegraph not being a news source of choice, but the first line of his Wiki page describes him as a political satirical journalist.

So it does - I wonder whether he regards himself like that. Satire can of course be hard to spot nowadays, truth having overtaken fiction in so many ways.J T Melsom wrote: ↑Sat May 30, 2020 10:06 pmthe first line of his Wiki page describes him as a political satirical journalist.

According to Spanish-language Wikipedia he played chess with his friend and comrade Juan Demarchi.

nick >Michael Deacon is not satirical.<
You mean that when he wrote that pickpockets and burglars needed state support, because of the falloff in their income, he was being serious, or at any rate, not joking?

I do seem to be losing this one. I had not been struck by this side of his writing before.Stewart Reuben wrote: ↑Sun May 31, 2020 12:49 pmnick >Michael Deacon is not satirical.<

Chess in rugby analogy...

Re: Media comments on chess
It is a reference to chess in a book, just like my previous posts in this thread. I guess its just descriptive prose, nothing more than that. Some time back I did suggest that we might have a separate thread, but books are 'media' so I think its legitimate. I think it is actually quite interesting how many authors still refer to chess.

A team of two self described "chess players" in today's Bargain Hunt, apparently.
