I notice that one of those wretched meerkats on advertisements was playing chess yesterday.

I don't think I'd previously been aware of Ned Beatty and Gene Hackman playing chess in Superman II (which I've not seen)

but before I'd properly identified it, I also came across this, which I really have no idea about.

"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Boris Johnson is gearing up for a multi dimensional game of chess if I heard correctly during his speech which allegedly has something to do with his vision of the future.

He may have acquired the line from the creeps at the IEA
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Here's an old item from The Westminster Gazette - Tuesday 18 April 1911, which doesn't count as history...

Man City stayed up, as they will probably do again this season. But in 1911, weren't they still three years short of Capablanca's first meeting with Lasker?

I claim no erudition in chess history, but according again to Wikipedia

"In 1911, Capablanca challenged Lasker for the World Chess Championship. Lasker accepted his challenge while proposing 17 conditions for the match. Capablanca objected to some of the conditions, which favored Lasker, and the match did not take place".

This would seem to make the story plausible.

1921 Was when the match took place Capablanca won easily.

10 years earlier teams like BUry Were the team to beat

There's a new film coming to Netflix shortly.

Made in Poland, the setting is a match between a US player and a Soviet player during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.

Bradford City had their best-ever season in 1911 - 5th in Division One, and the FA Cup.

“The staff has tried to bolster spirits but you can only play so many games of trivia,” said passenger Angela Jones.

The report claims all the passenger's are "healthy" and as regards coronavirus claims are made in the article that they are not infected because the end of the 2 week cruise - which first sailed from Hong Kong - has now been reached.

However, I recently read that the incubation period for this coronavirus infection has been found to continue for up to 24 days and not 14 days as originally believed.

I'd be tempted by the whisky tasting.
