How, you wonder, might El País be describing tonight's football match
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Speaking of football, Chess United play in the Sunday league in the Watford area at the Maple Cross playing fields.
Surely their strip is a black/white chequered pattern.
(now intrigued - would like more info, I have a phone number for them but it is not recognised.)
The badge is a Knight, I have decided it is the King's Knight and....
The 'King's Knight, currently 7-1 is running today at the 14:40 at CHESSter.
Worth a a few quid each way - Willie Hills are paying 1-4 places e/way for that one.
(also running in the same race is 'Boardman. 9/4 favourite, not worth it e/way but it is an omen.)

Apparently there’s a horse called Chess Player. A few months ago a friend told me that (thinking of me) he’d had placed a tenner on the nose - the horse was the favourite and finished a close second. I told him what a coincidence that was because it’s where I mostly finish!

Yesterday evening I was watching Richard Linklater's film Before Midnight (2013) and during one sequence Ethan Hawke started talking about chess, computers and Garry Kasparov, and I think gave a brief impression of Kasparov.

Hi Dave,
I too have bet on Chess Player. It's how I pick my horses and dogs, anything to do with chess.
(It's also how I picked my wife - she has chequered eyes!)
Both Boardman (£5.00 to win) and Kings Knight (£2.00 e/way) came in so I have money coming back.
Good. Soon I'll be able to afford the cost a new chess book.
(Is it just me or have others also noticed that over £20.00 for a new book is fast becoming the norm.)
Hi Justin,
Recently read a short story by Ambrose Bierce, 'Moxon's Master' about a chess computer. I did some net searching on it.
'First published in The San Francisco Examiner on April 16, 1899, it is one of the first descriptions
of a robot in English-language literature written much before the word 'robot' came to be used.'

Kevin >Ah, I had you down more as an Eminem fan?<
The internet tells me Eminem is a rapper. I might love his music - if ever I should listen to it. Jazz or Easy Listening are more my scene.

I have now been exposed to Eminem for about 3-4 minutes. I realise the lyrics did mention chess.
I hope not to do so again.

I think that Cummings as a (moderate strength) chessplayer has been discussed here before.

It's a piece by Dominic Lawson in which he likens the appearance by the other Dominic (Cummings) before the Select Committee to a chess master taking on all-comers in a simul.
The forum had already outed DC as a player.
