A mate of mine once told me how on one occasion (some decades ago now), captaining his club team, he arranged for them all to turn up in rugby gear. Highly successful, by his account. Don't know if shin pads were included.

It seems that James Bond is a chess player.

Not a very good one though as he has just been mated, although his opponent also appears to be in check (if the W king is on b1). So presumably the last move was the illegal Qe4 x b7 mate.

And why are all the captured black pieces on black's side of the board?

Difficult to be certain, but I would guess c1 rather than b1. Surely on their budget they'd be able to afford a chess advisor?
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Breakfast this morning on BBC-1 had a piece about NFL team Jacksonville Jaguars who play one of their home matches each season at Wembley. One of their coaches informed Sports Reporter Mike Bushell that playing Jag Tag (a less physical game) was like playing chess.

Thank you, Matthew.
I hadn't realised that pi has its own day. March the 14th, 3.14, makes sense.

Oh yeah him
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

From today's live football commentary

"It's like a chess match - we need a queen on each wing for it's movement, the most omnipotent piece on the board".

No idea what the commentator was on about - it finished 0-0! :(

The first sentence

It is seen as a studious game, played in respectful silence by frown-lined intellectuals who deliberate for ages before making a move.

is idiotic.

The second
But now a slanging match has broken out in the world of chess after a decision by one of England's grandmasters to defect to Wales.

is untrue.

That said, you have to give credit to Leon Watson for his consistent ability to get chess non-stories into the national press.

Does anyone remember why he left Wales for England when he was an IM?

I think I just heard Geoff Boycott say that batting in a test match is like playing chess. When you watch people playing chess they think about their moves, unless they're a grandmaster.

The Bottom Line, Saturday afternoon, Radio 4 discussed Sponsorship. No mention of chess, but plenty of references to sport, and the reputational damage that can be inflicted on a sponsor if the organisation sponsored has a problem
