Yes, I remember seeing that magazine. Evening Standard James Olley 10 Jan.
King's castle is crumbling as Gazidis quietly lays the foundations for a new ruler (for Arsenal's manager).
....The pieces are quietly being moved into place but Gazidis has so far proved unwilling to make the checkmate move by taking the King, even if relations with Wenger are strained as a result of the alterations.
It was surreal reading this as passing a noiseless Stamford Bridge at 8.40pm. Ok the match finished 0-0. Not like it is even close to a grandmaster draw. Highlights on Channel 5 around 11pm. Hopefully quick & show some more highlights of last night's Man City v Bristol City instead.

Last night's "Eggheads" featured a team which seemed to be not only a quiz team but a group of chess players from Horncastle area of Lincolnshire. I regret I did not recognise any of them.

Am sure this was mentioned on this forum earlier, but can't find the thread right now.BBC wrote:CES 2018: Square Off smart chessboard moves its own pieces
An internet-connected chessboard that moves its own pieces is on show at the CES tech trade show in Las Vegas.
The machine is the result of a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign and is designed to make it easier to play against friends and rivals based elsewhere.

Back in the days (late 1980s / early 1990s) when dedicated chess computers were state of the art, I think I saw a report of one that had a robot arm, so you didn't have to make the engine's move for it. I suppose building the equivalent of a DGT board with a hidden robot arm which moves the pieces has a certain logic to it, but at a serious level everyone has long since mastered the art of viewing and playing games essentially using a diagram.Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Thu Jan 11, 2018 11:14 pmhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/technology ... own-pieces

I don't know if this counts, but Eminem's "River", featuring Ed Sheeran, comments:-
"And she just wants to exact revenge and get back
It's a chess match, she's on his back like a jet-pack"
Well, yes.
Perhaps we need a thread for chess in literature.
But more on topic, "Tipping Point" (ITV 4pm Mon - Fri) usually has a chess question.

OK - I'll try "quite often"! It was about 50 % last week.
Big Fat Quiz of Everything last night had a chess question in the first 15 minutes.

Yesterday's 'Guardian' TV guide pejoratively describes one serial's (McMafia's) progress as having "all the thrilling urgency of correspondence chess played by second-class post".

Looking forward to Garry's music choices. I expect one or two from chess the musical, nil of Nigel Short's music tastes.
A bit of Frankie (Sinatra or Goes to Hollywood). Some opera or even heavy metal (Ecstacy of Gold) and a piano concerto.
No glam rock. But a bit of 'Pussy Riot' will tie up with some of his activities.
