Out of interest, I decided to change my media habits, from 5 to 6, my norm is to listen to Radio 4, which I did as usual and yes great, they had Susan Polgar explaining Magnus Carlsen's historic win. Normally I would listen to the ITV local news and then the BBC local news.

Listening to the BBC national news, nothing, zilch, they deemed the Dr Who series much more important, which although they call it science fiction, I can't ever remember ever seeing any science on it, unlike Star Trek, which often has a scientific/philosophical slant to it, in fact I gave up watching Dr Who years ago.

Next the ITV national news, nothing, probably because they can find no connection between chess and washing powder, insurance, or payday loans.

Channel 4 nothing.

Tut tut, I think the people running our TV media, are the equivalent of alcoholics in charge of the brewery.

Yeah bangin, it has had a good mention on Aljazeera.

Maybe one day, all human beings might have sufficient food and clean water.

Perhaps logic, should be the only religion.

According to the BBC...

Former British Chess champion Joseff Thomas says Magnus Carlsen has a grasp on the game ''that would usually take players 20 to 30 years''

He was making the point that most young(er) players were very tactical, but that Magnus Carlsen was very positional (although I think he avoided using the word positional). He was saying that evolution in playing style (at whatever level of play you are) would normally take 20 or 30 years. He wasn't saying if you play for 20 or 30 years you'd be as good as Carlsen.
Yes, Joseff Thomas obviously isn't an experience interviewee and he could have been clearer.
but No, what he said wasn't ridiculous for the average punter, or even, Peter Turland.

Some coverage on BBC Breakfast today in the Newspaper review ... "the three giants of the game in the 20th/21st Century BORIS Fischer, Kasparov and now Carlsen" I guess nice that they finally mentioned it amongst the Dr. Who love-in.

If the BBC does have a list somewhere of people to contact for comment on chess matters, who should be on that list, or who should the BBC be turning to if they don't have such a list? Newspaper columnists? If they contacted the ECF, who would the ECF have put them in touch with? Remembering that this was a Friday afternoon.

There will be a chess-related item on this morning's BT Sports Panel programme on BT Sport 1 which has just started, in which an ECF Director will feature.

We are now underway - Alex Holowczak, Sabrina Chevannes and Yang-Fan Zhou.

So the arbiter is mentioned ahead of the players. That's a first.

BT wanted a media friendly arbiter. I wasn't considered suitable.

The specification as I understand it was "20-something, media-friendly and up-and-coming", so it may not have been the media-friendly box that you failed to tick. :)

Thank you for the additional information, which Alex failed to mention to me.

Anyway, how did the broadcast go?

As a chess item in a programme for general sports fans I thought it went very well. To begin with, Alex was asked about the World Championship match. There was then some more general conversation involving Sabrina and Yang-Fan, touching on cheating and playing styles, after which the game (20/20) got underway as a Classical King's Indian with Sabrina as White. Five or so moves in the programme moved onto other items while the game continued.

Alex provided a couple of progress reports, in the course of which he was asked about drug testing. We eventually returned to the players after the game had finished: Yang-Fan had sacrificed a pawn to set up a mating attack which was crashing through before Sabrina (who had less time on her clock) could queen a pawn.

Back to Earth with a bump: I am just about to settle down to read a 17-page document about the grading system sent to me by the new Manager for Grading...
