They were close, The 1938 Championship was held in Brighton and Fairhurst was the 1937 'defending' champion but he did not play in 1938.

Cannot find an Alexander game opening with 'his customary 1.d4' he was a 1.e4 man. ( a few 1.c4's)

He faced only one French Defence in that tournament v the registered blind player Theodore Henry Tylor.
It was an Alekhine-Chatard and Tylor won.

"Meanwhile Alexander suffered his first defeat, at the hands of T. H. Tylor.

He played the Chatard attack 6. P-KR4 against Tylor's French Defence.
This is supposed to have been refuted by the Russian analysts:
but the Russian analysts are quite mistaken, as Alexander immediately demonstrated.

He castled on the queen side and obtained a positional advantage which should
have been decisive; but in a very complicated position he lost his way, allowing a
bishop to be trapped and losing two pieces for a rook.

He could still have made a fight, but finished himself off by making a blunder and losing yet another piece.
Alexander is, unfortunately, suffering from a heavy cold." (The Times, 17 Aug 1938)

I think I was interviewed at Oxford by Tylor for an undergraduate course. The reason it is only 'think' is that I worked out who it must have been later on.

I was watching the tennis in Paris today. There came o an ad which slowly, and attractively, bdecame a chessboard and set.
The sole caption was soemthing like CHESS ARMAGEDDON 10-16 June.

In my TV guide it shows Chess: Grand Prix Series at 11pm-12 on Eurosport 2 on 10 June. I cannot yet find it on the other days.

Just got my partner to set the Sky Box at home, and she she says its repeated on EuroSport 1 at 7.30am and EuroSport 2 at 10.30am, which https://www.eurosport.co.uk/eurosport-tv-schedule.shtml confirms.

It is titled "Grand Prix Series" and the searches don't seem to find any more.

There was discussion of the games. There were comments by the players afterwards. You could see the board and positions clearly.
BUT IT WAS ALL VIRTUALLY TOTALLY USELESS.
The reason was that was was actually shown was not electronically produced diagrams, but actual pieces on a board. The commentary often said something like, 'Both games were drawn after sharp play in the Queen's Gambit Declined with the weakness of the isolated queen's pawn being neutralised by it being exchanged off.
Since the first programme went through all the games, I presume the to showings today, Tuesday are just repeats.

What a total let down.

What do you expect from World Chess/Agon?

I was puzzled that Aronian had apparently played the English Opening, but a weird sideline, where you don't play c4.

No, neither Kramnik, nor Gelfand played in the programme I saw last night and viewed again this morning.

I decided to watch again, in case I was simplay prejudiced against a new way of doing things. But, the commentary was virtually entirely divorced from any moves shown and thus virtually useless, I suppose it is very difficult to do a one hour summary of a whole chess tournament. Probably better is to show the bare results, plus highlights of the tournament play. I find that unsatisfactory for tennis, because I can usually work out who won, before the end, by the way the match is edited.
Possibly the programme makers were told only one hour's screen time was available.

That is one of the points, There was often a disconnect between the commentary and what you saw of the position.

Well no, they are playing today, so you're unlikely to have seen a broadcast before the games were played
