Tom Crewe, in the London Review of Books:
...political commentators look down on Westminster as at a chessboard. We keep an eye on the pawns; we consider the positions of the bishops and knights. (The Supreme Court verdict is a judgment on a manoeuvre; it is a marvellous chess move, but not a checkmate.)
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Justin >Not quite sure what point you're trying to make here<

Not really a point, just collecting media inputs about chess.
But, if you want one, publicity about females playing chess can be very valuable for promoting our sport.

A very attractive photo in Thursday's Daily Telegraph on page 14.
It shows two girls playing in the ECF Junior Female Championships in Blenheim Palace.

Friday Telegraph sport section. Headline, "Long relishes mastering 'game of chess' at Harlequins". Sean Long spent many years involved in Rugby League (which was openly professional) but wants a couple of years in Rugby Union (which is now openly professional after years of pretending to be amateur). Long continued, "It's like rugby league's a game of draughts and rugby union is a game of chess."

"News at Ten" has just informed us that "Boris Johnson is playing a complicated game of chess with the EU on one hand and Parliament on the other." (from memory).

Ordinary chess is complicated enough, three-way chess is more difficult...

You might have thought Dom Cummings could cope with it though, with his GIANT BRAIN and everything :D

I dunno .... brain the size of a planet, and meant to be content with running a little no-account country like England? How could he be expected to cope with that? Very badly, I suspect. :(

"This is a proper game of chess", the World Rugby Radio commentator-cum-buffoon informs us.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

BBC News at 1 today.

'Like chess pieces on the Brexit Board'.

That is my faulty memory of what was said.

Delighted to hear the commentator on Sevilla v Atlético refer to the game as "ajedrez", albeit a bit surprised since it's a much less cagey game than you'd expect from that.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

El Jueves, which (although they're very different) is the closest thing Spain has to Private Eye, offers us a caption contest.

Double whammy on tonight's American Football highlights (Minnesota Vikings vs Dallas Cowboys):

The commentators first waxed lyrical about Cowboys' Wide Receiver Amari Cooper being- "a quiet guy, who rarely talks ... always practicing his chess in the locker room ... a real student of the game."

Then later, as if shackled to their previous comments, came the inevitable likening of the football game to - "a really interesting game of chess."
