'Michael Deacon is not satirical'. I'd not heard of him, the Daily Telegraph not being a news source of choice, but the first line of his Wiki page describes him as a political satirical journalist.

Good choice for chess, though.

So it does - I wonder whether he regards himself like that. Satire can of course be hard to spot nowadays, truth having overtaken fiction in so many ways.

CJ Sansom Tombland - the gentleman prisoners play chess in Norwich Castle.

I.Allende The House of Spirits - one of the characters plays chess regularly with the President. Does anybody know whether Salvador Allende played chess?

nick >Michael Deacon is not satirical.<

You mean that when he wrote that pickpockets and burglars needed state support, because of the falloff in their income, he was being serious, or at any rate, not joking?

I do seem to be losing this one. I had not been struck by this side of his writing before.

Chess in rugby analogy...

""I went straight into his office and said 'Mike I don't trust you, I think you have been playing games behind my back, you have used me as a bit of a pawn in your game of chess, I can't put my boots on and play for you every week'."

Mark Mason : Move Along Please ' One field contains a dozen white sheep and two black ones, like a giant chess game that someone's about to lose.'

It is a reference to chess in a book, just like my previous posts in this thread. I guess its just descriptive prose, nothing more than that. Some time back I did suggest that we might have a separate thread, but books are 'media' so I think its legitimate. I think it is actually quite interesting how many authors still refer to chess.
