Hi Jack.

Excellent.

Honestly anybobdy walking past your board here:

Would have called across a controller claiming the board had
been set up wrong at the start of the game.

I have a fine collection of games where the final mating
position has the King and Queen on swapped thrones.

I ran a small competition asking for a name for this type of mate.
We have Boden's mate, Anastasia's mate etc...and we know in our
mind right away what sort of set up is involved.

The winner was 'Transvestite Mate' because there is an opening (apparently)
called the Transvestite Attack where within the first four moves White
must play 1.e3 2. Ke2 3.Qe1 and 4.Kd1.

This 'attack' was named and supplied with an example from play by a well
known poster on this site.
I suppose if Black replies 1...e6 2...Ke7 3...Qe8 4...Kd8
We have the Transvestite Defence.

I've spent decades trying to invent an opening where I can
get the Bishops to swap squares but have not yet succeeded.
Getting the f1 Bishop to c1 is proving very tricky.
When I finally succeed I'll called it the Convert Manoeuvre.

I looked at that game and thought it was some sort of strange french defence, I didnt realise it had come from a kings gambit

I actually saw this happen in the game next to me in a tournament once.

King and Queen interchanging have been seen before in the 4NCL and in a Wessex match at Hinckley as well.

Well, basically the kings gambit with a different move order - kind of like how the french is a variation of the sicilian with a different move order.

Except that if Black essays 3...ef4? in this position, he is liable to get squashed in short order after 4e5!

Regular 1e4 e5 players will probably know that, but I have seen a few Alekhine specialists fall for it after the 1e4 Nf6 2Nc3 e5 3f4 move order :)

Hi Joey,

Matt is correct. White has pushed up his f-pawn but this is not a King’s Gambit.
More akin to a Latvian a very good tempo up.

In the King’s Gambit White is never threatening fxe5 early doors.

If play went 2..a6 3.fxe5 then Black gets a winning position with 3…Qh5+

That is why the King’s Gambit is a mugs opening.
It threatens nothing, it weakens the Kingside etc..etc..
There are at least three other piece developing moves better than 2.f4.
You don’t have to take my word for it, just recall the last time it was played in a WC match.

However the Latvian (which some people think is a King's Gambit reversed)
does threaten to take the e-pawn because it hits a Knight and
the path d1-h5 is block by the f3 Knight.

This Latvian link matters, I’ll show why with the game.

A.Siwiec (2025) - J.Szewczyk (2051) Lasker Memorial 2007

Are you watching Jack, you will like this.

Fitting that this game should come from the Lasker Memorial you should read
what Lasker had to say about the King’s Gambit. (It threatens nothing, it weakens the Kingside etc..etc..)
