True about the money.

Just for amusement cf the junior grades - if you convert the junior ECF grades to FIDE ratings then the juniors on the live boards have actually very slightly underachieved overall. That's mostly down to Marcus Harvey having an exceedingly high ECF.

Its a much more accurate estimate than their FIDE grades are though. Almost comically so. Something of a shame that you can't just 'lose' their official FIDE registrations down the back of a sofa or something!

For what its worth going back to Simon/Roger's point.

Ive never played the British as I do not play much outside the 4NCL. But I qualified by winning Yarmouth open with 3.5/4 V 195 avg but I felt this was not good enough performance to warrent myself playing.

Id want to score over 2350+ performance in 4NCL before I felt I could play.

Otherwise Id play the Major Open if I play at the British again.

I like David Howell's position, tournament could be over today.

Is Hebden about to lose to Yang-Fan Zhou, or can he hold out for a draw?

I'm pretty sure the ending is winning for Yang-Fang. Maybe Ameet Ghasi will hold a draw on top board.

Yes i think it is winning for Yang-Fang and if he does he be in with a good chance of 2nd place. and of course he bag the U21 title as well :D

Yes I thought so, Yang-Fan will be 3 pawns up, which seems to be enough!

only 2 pawns up now, might be winning who knows, but if it is, no doubt it requires very good technique particularly with the split pawns

I doubt it's that hard to win, the White king is pretty bad in the sense that there should be a lot of opportunities for Black to threaten to get the queens off.

edit: not sure I understand 53...f5 though, seems to weaken the Black king significantly?

second edit: actually I really hate 53...f5, perhaps there are real drawing chances for Mark now.

Are we keeping Nalimov-consulting comments off here to not ruin it for people?

I have read a comment elsewhere, however specifically haven't switched my engine on, I'd like to try and understand what's going on myself

No, go ahead. I'll postulate that Black's still winning but it takes *a lot* longer after 53...f5, that just can't ever be a good move.

No go ahead, the comment I read was regarding a table base anyway

(In fact at this precise moment, its looking a lot clearer)
